You know, i think we can also say... whatever else she may be, Root is deeply hopeful. Even when she was full of cynicism, back in her early days, she had hope in the Machine, in finding it, this higher being she had learned existed.

Then at the end of season 3, she is the one to remind Harold of hope. The message comes from the Machine, but she is its prophet, its interface. The Machine is her God, and She spoke of hope, the last thing in Pandora's box.

And now, when everything is lost, even her trust in the Machine, Harold says hope is painful, that it's time to move on. And Root says goodbye, and chooses to hope when nobody else will.

so i know i'm like two weeks late, but let me just say i really enjoyed 4x12 Ctrl-Alt-Del and the shift in perspectives. which i know many probably didn't, but tbh there was no way around it, not within poi-writing context/style

many people wanted the violent revenge rampage... but, we've already goten to see that after joss's death, and to somehow do a repeat of that would be a disservice to both carter and shaw (disregarding for a minute the fact that one was clear cut vengance and the other one was more of a rescue mission). it's just not the sort of sequence you can do again and expect the same emotional pay off, to call it something. and repeats just cheapen all of them. so, im glad we didn't get that, not framed in the same way.

instead, for the better part of the episode, we got echoes of it. it was still happening, carelessly and ruthlessly and with no more secrecy than a pair of masks, so out in the open that even the media got a hold of something going on, but all the while the focus was with Control. and not idly, either, but reather going forward with the plot and the narrative and adding elements and hints and changing the scenary just a little bit more. going further.

post if-then-else i was worried about how they'd deal with the aftermath, but once again the show did it exactly right imo

You know what didn't happen and I was wishing would've happened? A Team Machine dinner/drinking moment.

There are two foodies (Shaw and Harold) on the team with a character who is canonically a good cook (John). I was holding out for a brief moment where everyone has a moment to breathe and just be together. And when I mean everyone, I mean Root and Harold included.

Heck, John and Shaw were hardly in the same place after 4x07!

When, and I say WHEN Shaw returns I demand a scene similar to the ending tag of Avangers, where everyone is tiredly eating in a diner somewhere bruised and battered but together.

I want that to happen, dammit!

Sarah Shahi is credited for an ep or two after this? I think so. So, Shaw probably isn't dead, even though/especially because Sarah said goodbye for now. But it is very worrying to think about.

Yeah, I've seen that too and I wonder how they'll play it out and then after those two episodes I'm going to be the saddest panda because we won't know when she'll be back :(

I think that if Sarah can't or won't come back, that this ending, this death, was the best of the worst options for Shaw. It was built up to, and it was her choice in the end to do it, no one else's. She wasn't killed to further the plot either. So as heartbroken as it'd make me if Shaw was really dead, I do think this was a good ending for her, and I wanted to know your thoughts, since I consider you a Shaw expert. :)

Oh gosh anon, I’m so tied up right now.

I wish Sarah all the best and I’m so happy for her because twins! And yeah, I really like how she went out on her own terms for everything from how she went down (defiant to the very end) and with Root, letting know she cared in the very final moments in her own way, in her own terms.

Which is, for someone like Shaw is a good end.

I could accept it and it might be foolish to hope, but I’m holding up hope. She’s Schroedinger Shaw now. I live in hope that in time when its really dire and Root’s prepared to make a sacrificial play and a Samaritan operative raise their gun at Root, a crack of gun fire echoes through the air. And Root flinches, except she’s not the one who gets shot and the operative goes down with a thud.

"Hey, honey. Did you miss me?"

And then Root gasps, turns around and there Shaw is, looking pale and drawn but *there*. Looking like she went to hell and back several times but there.

That’s my ideal scenario. That’s what I want.
