I'm starting to think some of you guys were too easily scared as children cause what do you mean you still as an adult find Dark Crystal nightmarishly scary? Skill issue tbh. The Skeksis might give you nightmares, I just think they're delightfully unpleasant.
'why did they show us films as kids that had DEATH and GRIEF in them???' idk man because children are morbid little creatures that are just discovering these ideas and need a safe way to practise those huge emotions? sorry you couldn't cope with cartoon animals dying but like. these are in fact appropriate things for children to know about and learn how to handle.
It is objectively Good for children to have the chance to practise grief, fear, loss and sadness in safe, low-stakes environments where they don't actually lose anything and aren't in any danger
because otherwise the first time they learn to process those feelings will be when it IS real and it DOES matter.
some good books to start em young are things like Goodbye Mog or The Sad Book or children's horror stories like Goosebumps. and yeah like. Watership Down, Black Beauty, Animals of Farthing Wood, Bambi - stuff that deals with grief and loss in a vivid but age-appropriate way.
as for scary things. this one is weird because quite frankly small children have wild imaginations and will develop fears of some very random things whether or not they're exposed to scary media. like I was scared by watching Jurassic Park as a kid. reasonable. normal. how did this fear manifest? I got scared of the showerhead because it reminded me of the spitting dinosaur. Make that make sense. If you only ever show kids like, Care Bears, they will protect almost as intense a fear onto that as they would onto Dark Crystal or the Black Cauldron - the story is just a cipher for them to process their bigger feelings.
also, and on the other hand. if you're 30+ years old and still scared of Muppets and animated animals you may have an actual problem. I'm not saying that in a perjorative sense but like. are you good?
I recently saw a pretty serious reviewer arguing that books like Old Yeller, The Yearling, The Bridge to Terabithia, and Where the Red Ferns Grow are problematic because they're manipulating children into feeling sad and/or disturbed (iirc, it was specifically along the lines of "they (the books) are teaching children to accept whatever bad things happen to them". )
Yes, these books are sad. That's the whole point! Sometimes terrible things will happen to you, sometimes you'll have to do something that absolutely breaks your heart, sometimes you'll lose people or animals that you loved dearly and you'll just have to learn how to carry on., because that's how life works!
Introducing these ideas at a young age is a good thing. Kids cannot live sheltered from these feelings- they'll come, regardless of how protective you are as a parent

yeah yeah rainbow capitalism is bad and whatever but like. when I was a child, being pro gay was not the popular or lucrative choice. I'm happy that times have changed.
I miss rainbow capitalism. I do. I miss when it felt like public opinion was still pro gay. I understand it was always an empty gesture, but it mattered in a sense of knowing how socially acceptable being queer is. If that makes sense.
One of the things I found so interesting walking away from Supergirl 2026 is how the movie portrays Kara’s use of her powers. With Clark they always feel innate, part of him, like they are him. He is Superman because of his powers. Kara meanwhile treats them as this rad tool she now suddenly gets to use to make her invincible. And she can turn them on and off just by going to a different solar system! You can feel her struggle with home and identity in each and every aspect of her usage and that makes the fact that they are powers so visceral. Again, we’re all used to Kryptonite and red suns as comic fans but I feel like this movie helps showcase the powers as mere tools because they are. It’s the person who makes the powers. Yes she’s Supergirl but she’s actually Kara Zor-El of Krypton and Argo and when she’s around a yellow sun she has powers she can use to do some good.
AND! Unlike Clark, she didn't grow up with them. They're still somewhat new, but she's had them long enough that she was surprised to be bleeding in a fight.
It's such an interesting perspective to think about, it mirrors her experience being inbetween "home is Argo" and "home is Earth"

I can’t believe I saw a video saying, with passion, that Jenny was the villain of the Forrest Gump movie.

Even when I was young I understood Jenny was someone who was broken and didn’t know how to deal with the abuse she went through.
Only to find out there was a majority of people who hated her character and considered her a villain. WTF.
I am still so amazed that Kathryn Hahn and Melanie Lynskey has never done a project together.

One thing I will say about the new Avengers movie. Please none of our witches be part of that movie.
I used to despair the separation of Marvel TV and movie but now I’m all for it.
Especially since I’ve always had a problem with how Avengers movies interfere with character arcs previous movies or shows have established.
Also there is no way our MCU Death would work for Doom. People have to realize Death is a Cosmic Being, beyond gods.

there's like. SOME kind of really radical difference in how different people approach reblogging on this site bcos some people clearly do feel that whatever they say in reblogs is their own post and therefore their own business.
but like. by default when you reblog a post on tumblr what happens next is, the OP gets a notification that contains the text of what you said + a link to read the whole addition. you are in effect emailing them your addition. & then acting like they're the weird one if they asked wtf you're on about.

A lot of the actors for Yellowjackets are making their goodbye posts/wrap posts. (A rare thing in this TV landscape, honestly it’s a gift when a show gets more than 3 seasons and can find a way to end it without being canceled).
Most of the fans are think after YJ is done that meant the fandom is over.
But as someone who has loved several shows that ended years and years ago, that’s really not the case, IMO.
Sure the interest could ebb and flow but the community built around the show can last. And fandoms can last along with them.
A show that ends can be a different thing than when it was airing, and fun in different ways, IMO.
Watching a reaction group watch Jessica Jones pilot episode for the first time and I just get taken back with how GODDAMN AMAZING the pilot episode was.
The whole season was PERFECT and it’s a constant sadness that the show couldn’t live up to it every season after.
Jessica Jones season 1 is in the same pantheon of perfect first seasons as Veronica Mars season 1.
unfortunately i dont think its queerbaiting if the creator is just so terminally heterosexual that they never remotely considered the same gender relationship their show is centered around could be read as romantic. it is deeply painful however.

By definition you can't accidentally queerbait. Queerbaiting is specifically using a same sex pair from the show to market the show to queer audiences with no intention of ever following through on a romantic relationship.
There is officially licensed Destiel merch signed off on by Kripke. Teen Wolf had a commercial with the actors for Derek and Stiles draped over each other talking about being "on a ship." Both shows actively used scenes between them as marketing while actively mocking fans for wanting them together. Sherlock has multiple characters refer to Johnlock as a couple, including characters we're supposed to believe are never wrong about human behavior and pushed those scenes in marketing. Then they acted insulted when fans saw them as a couple.
That's queerbaiting.
Done on accident it would just be queer subtext. Done because they had no other choice due to censorship is queer coding.
The specific meaning of the word is really starting to get lost and it's a pretty important one to keep accurate. It describes a very specific phenomenon that was done repeatedly and maliciously for decades and is meant to examine that specifically.
Doing it on accident sucks, but it isn't a tactic of capitalism intentionally intended to suppress queer representation while making money from queer fans.
