Today is my first day of school and I am being showered with the customs of kids going to their first day of school.

I was given a Schultüte (also known as a Zuckertüte) and a new Schulranzen (School bag.)

The custom dates back more than 200 years when parents in the Eastern part of Germany gave their kids sweet gifts at the beginning of their school year.

Modern parents also take the traditional photo of the kid leaving the house with their presents.

was looking through a website with my mama today, and we came across Schultueten. They are usually large cone shaped bags that are stuffed with school supplies and candies for a child's entry into the first grade. Usually they're about the same size as the child, I know that mine was. I would like to start this tradition here in the States because it really does make starting a relatively scary part of the rest of your life a bit easier.
