Criticom - Console Fighting Games of 1995
Criticom (also known as Criticom: Critical Combat) is a 1995 sci‑fi fighting game developed by Kronos Digital Entertainment for the PlayStation and later ported to the Sega Saturn. The game features eight fighters from across the galaxy, each competing for possession of a mysterious crystal artifact. Every character has a unique backstory explaining their connection to the crystal, including standouts like Gorm, a towering reptilian brute; Yenji, a swift ninja; S.I.D., a deadly combat robot; and Demonica, a vampiric being with a provocative design.
Combat takes place on a circular elevated arena, and unlike most fighters of the era, Criticom does not use rounds. Instead, each fighter has a power meter and a single automatic refill. Battles end when a fighter’s meter is fully depleted, when someone is knocked or jumps off the platform, or when the timer expires. With its futuristic setting, unusual cast, and distinctive arena‑based ruleset, Criticom stands as one of the more experimental mid‑90s 3D‑styled fighters.
