Maya is a special to me in a very personal way
@scissorspipe and I were once in a relationship with a third person; it ended badly and left us a little adrift. (Like, 100s of miles away from home, stranded without a vehicle, for a few days until we could catch our flight back home). It was weird.
At the time I ID’d as male, but that identity was starting to shift, or maybe I was understanding it a little better?
When we got home, Elliott and I started a campaign of Borderlands 2 together; they as Maya, me as Krieg. They’re a good team and also the shipping ofc is cute. Playing together, just the two of us after so long of kind of having to share each other was really nice. It felt symbolic, like building the team of the two of us back up.
And of course we kinda roleplay as we play the game because it’s hard not to! You’re immersed in the adventures of Maya and Krieg!
And around that time I started to realize I was maybe more woman than I had initially thought and that shift in identity was kinda centered around Maya? And at the same time, my attracted shifted more towards women than it did to men (and of course that was also centered on Maya because she’s really cute! Her VA did a great job)
Meanwhile, Elliott really identifies with Maya (they have a Maya-centered aesthetic blog @vaulthuntermaya if you wanna check it out!) so as a result, Maya makes me think of Elliott.
So maybe it seems a little obsessive and weird but I don’t mind that. It is what it is. Yeah she’s just a fictional character but people have a tendency to really care about and identify with fictional characters all the time.
So watching Maya die in pain (?) and afraid and then nobody even cares hit me real hard.
