These incredible renderings were completed on a strange canvas- bracket fungi! Also known as “Artist’s conk”. The talented artist is Max Brödel , who was primarily known for his medical illustrations in the late 1800′s and early 1900′s.
Using a small metal tool, Max would scratch these renderings into the bracket fungus. The marks on the fungus cause a color change and when the fungus dries the marks are preserved.
To see more about Max’s work and to learn more about his legacy ( he trained a medical illustrator who went on to establish the AMI, who’s conference I saw these fungi at) check out this fantastic article by Vanessa Ruiz of Street Anatomy
