Short Stay 6
[The full series.]
An old, familiar, wonderful voice, and Ty is upright and wide awake, moving towards the hall.
A hand around his shirt collar arrests him and the old, familiar, hideous feeling of skin on him makes him shudder and still, head lowering.
“Get yourself into the bathroom, squirrel,” he’s told. No, he thinks, instinct as much as defiance, not there.
A second voice reaches him, also familiar. Then, there’s the sound of an impact, a body against a wall. Louder voices follow, shouting, which makes Ty pull back. His shirt collar is released and the guy steps forwards, and he falls back as he watches the door to the kitchen open and close.
Jim. Jim and – and AJ.
“Fuck off!” one of them yells – the one with the poached-pear voice, thinning out, sour. “Get off me!”
“Fat fucking chance,” AJ shouts back. “Go on, Jim!”
Ty gets up, standing on wobbly legs. How long has it been since they let him stand? Almost the whole day. He has to grab the pristine kitchen counter for support, and catch his breath.
He almost slips off it when the door opens and Jim is on the other side, eyes wide with stress and a busted lip dripping blood down his chin. Ty’s gaze zeroes in on the stain, and then he drags it away to Jim’s eyes and the relieved collapse of his tense, angry expression.
“Thank god,” he sighed. “You okay?”
Ty nods. He pushes himself off the counter. He feels suddenly, sickeningly, that he must look disgusting. They never let him shower after the first time, and he’s been wearing the same clothes for – how long has it been?
“Bastards told me they hadn’t seen you,” Jim mutters. Then he slips the strap of his bag off one shoulder and produces a bed sheet, thin and white cotton, and offers it to Ty.
Ty takes it, wrapping it around himself gratefully, hiding most of him and covering his skin.
“Home?” Jim suggests.
He nods again.
“Carry?”
He looks down at his legs, which feel like they’re made of spaghetti, slowly softening. Nod.
Jim steps forwards and, in that oh-so-careful way he has, gently sweeps Ty off his feet. He only touches where the sheet is, and he keeps his head up so there’s no close breathing or blood.
“Sorry it took so long.”
Ty just pulls the sheet up around his face, and rests it against Jim’s shoulder. He doesn’t lift his head to look at the house he kept pristine. He doesn’t even glance at AJ, standing in the hall with poached-pear and orange socks in matching arm locks, or the silent one nursing a broken nose on the stairs.
He only has eyes for Jim.
