This series begins with the return of Sherlock from his “death”  earlier than planned due to the illness of Mrs. Hudson (see tags/warnings).  It then follows the rocky reunion of Sherlock and John, some good case work, mystery, angst, first times, and a (personally I think, very good take on the Mary character.  Mystery and an ongoing question.

There are stories of fluff and porn and humor, there are themes of grief and sadness and loss.  There is brotherly love (that must be hid at all cost of course). There is a lost in the wilderness survival tale and a trip to Paris.....There is a really lovely relationship between John and Sherlock that doesn’t happen overnight but which as the series goes is built and becomes solid and believable.

Do yourself a favor and read the whole thing in order.  It is really worth it!

I watched the Golden Globes, Kevin Spacey made a wonderful speech and he spoke about  a great director, Stanley Kramer. You've seen or heard of his movies, On the Beach is one of my favorites (I have a soft spot for post-apocalyptic stories). So I went to find a movie of his that I had not yet watched. 

I came up on Inherit the Wind, which just happens to be about topics and ideas that are still relevant today. Religion in politics, policy makers using The Bible as fact, freedom of speech, freedom of thought, the vilification of science. 

When today we see that the man who is to now chair the committee that funds the sciences and NASA believes that the world is only 6000 years old, when conservative minds would like to take evolution out of schools and when religion is slowly creeping back into the forefront of everyday life even for those who do not believe, but mean no ill will towards those who do. This film represents that, and a time in our country when people fought against that. 

It's a great coincidence that I came upon this film. These courtroom dramas from the 50's and 60's are always so good. Tracy is great as always, March is magnificent, the surprise for me was Gene Kelly playing a reporter, the cynical type of person we are so used to today.

I'm glad I found this movie. Usually I'll post a screen shot from a film, but this scene is just so perfect. Watch it. Then watch the movie. And hope that there are still people out there with fight in them.

Hollowverse is an AU post-Reichenbach with a very different take on Mary.

Rec: A good, solid casefic with established Johnlock. This is part 65 (!) of the sprawling Sugarverse series but you don't need to read the others. Just accept that it's an alternate canon where John and Sherlock are together and enjoy.
