Day 6 of 31: Best Audio Narrator
Day 6 of 31: Best Audio Narrator
This really remains unchanged from the last time I did 31 Days. It still remains Scott Brick. Man is just amazing and versatile when it comes to the spoken word. Titus Welliver does an amazing job with the Harry Bosch novels, in no small part because of his performance in the Bosch series on Amazon Prime. He is the walking personification of Harry Bosch come to life. Joe Montegna narration…

The Bookshelf Conversations: Scott Brick
Sometimes I am surprised at how long I’ve been doing this, a fact that came to my attention when I reconnected with Scott Brick, an award-winning audiobook narrator with whom I first chatted in 2009. According to his bio, Brick “has narrated almost 900 audiobooks including titles such as: Jurassic Park, the Jack Reacher series, Alexander Hamilton, the Hunt For Red October, The Passage trilogy, In…

VO Peeps Storytelling with Scott Brick
By Michelle Blenker, Staff Writer As a young boy growing up Scott Brick was an avid reader….and loved being read to! He is now one of the most listened to Audio Book narrators of all time and has done so with the passion for the written word as his guidepost and the writers who write them his rockstars. Over 650 titles to his name (and growing) with a Grammy Nomination, 3 Audie’s and over 50 Earphone awards, Scott’s bio reads like a Voice Over Artist Fairytale! Scott fancied himself a comic book writer and graphic artist in the beginning of his college life but quickly discovered his home was on stage in the theatre at UCLA. He spent 6 years there honing his craft before embarking into the world of on stage work traveling with a Shakespearean Company. He auditioned for Dove Audio, and while there, met Dan Musselman, who left shortly after that day to work for Books on Tape. Dan gave Scott his business card and told him to keep in contact, and the story began of a Publisher and his “dream reader” in Scott. Some of Scott’s buddies pushed him into getting on the mic, and thank goodness for us that they did! Recently Scott came across Dan’s business card from that first day (at the bottom of a dusty box in his garage) and his mind was reeling with the “what if’s” of what has come to pass for him and his career! [caption id="attachment_4885" align="alignleft" width="300"] Jason Wineinger is directed by Scott Brick[/caption] When discussing his process for reading a book, Scott relies on a couple of important things; hydration (tea and water), and chapstick!!! He reads the book ahead of time and prepares his character voices for each… if the genre of the book is horror, he will watch a horror movie to get in the “right frame of mind” to tackle the text. Typically he hires a researcher to do some of his prep work for him making sure to breakdown the characters and reviewing pronunciations etc. ahead of time in the studio! He has seen many changes in the industry since the 90’s and has mixed feelings for the newcomers as sites like ACX can launch you well if you are well coached and directed however, those “services” are not usually availed to newcomers and you can easily be launched “poorly”. Scott tells that emotion and intent are more important to characters than the voice. That you must connect emotionally with the text for it to be believable. Having someone direct you is wonderful as well! Scott recommends paying someone (or bartering for) someone to do your audio editing for you! Scott was recently diagnosed with cancer and has begun pulling his head out of the studio to enjoy life a bit more. He stopped putting off his JOY and has begun living life at a more leisurely pace making sure to take a few days off here and there! [caption id="attachment_4889" align="alignright" width="300"] Global Peep Mike Martin is directed by Scott via video feed[/caption] Scott is currently on the Board of Directors of the Don La Fontaine Voice Over Lab and is actively involved in SAG-Aftra. He knows that the union is there to represent us all and to work to garner fair wages and rates for all! He recommends using Social Media to tell the story of your brand, and that to remember that audio books are a Marathon and not a sprint! For newcomers, keep in mind that you need a great narration demo to send to publishers for work! That your delivery must be conversational and that the stories you tell are the most important in the world! Our meetup continued with live direction by Scott for a few lucky Peeps in the live studio audience as well as for our global Peeps who joined us LIVE in a video hangout. We culminated with the Raffle drawing for a one on one coaching Scholarship with Scott brick who went to our lucky Peep Debbie McCaffrey! Congrats Debbie - I know I'm jealous!
