you’re gonna be a dad. well, step-dad.
If you had told Scott the first time he worked at the vet that he would now be fishing with Alan Deaton he probably would have laughed in your face.
Now he's on a boat with him, the silence ringing in his ears. The waves lap gently against port side and he breathes in the fresh, salty air. Deaton is behind him, tapping his fingers on his leg as he waits for a bite.
"This is fun." Scott tries to keep the sarcasm out of his voice, but a little bleeds through. He feels bad as soon he says it. Deaton didn't have to invite him to go fishing. Maybe it's because soon Deaton and Melissa are getting married. Don't get him wrong, Scott loves Deaton. He's been almost like a father to him these past few years, but Scott couldn't help thinking deep down that maybe his mom and his dad could get back together. It was one when she was dating, but now-
Now it's getting married and Deaton moving in and Deaton coming to Scott's graduation and family dinners and oh my God, what if Deaton and his mom have sex? Scott controls his breathing and tries to focus on fishing, but it's so hard.
"I hoped you would enjoy it." Deaton says, and Scott detects a hint of sadness in his voice.
"I do!" Scott reassures him. "It's just-"
Deaton cuts him off. "I know what you're going to say, Scott. I love your mother. You know that. She knows that. I know that."
Scott clenches his fists.
"But that's not what you're worried about, is it?" Deaton touches his shoulder gently and Scott lets his hands relax. "Scott, I know what you're worried about."
"You don't know anything." Tears well up in Scott's eyes and he raises a hand to wipe them away.
"You're worried I'm going to leave like Rafael did. Scott, I'm not."
Scott looks back at him, tears leaking down his cheeks. "How do you know? With the kind of world we live in? Werewolves and kanimas and monsters. I can't let my mom lose anyone else. I can't."
Scott points his index finger at him threateningly. "Don't say that. Don't make promises you can't keep. Just-" Scott sighs, his hand dropping to his side. "Let me know that you care for her and that you'll do whatever you can to protect her."
"You have my word, Scott." Deaton smiles then, taking his hand off Scott's shoulder and picking up his fishing pole. "Now how about we go back to fishing?"
Scott wipes his tears away and nods. "Sure. Next time, let's play video games though. I don't mean to be rude, but fishing is boring."
Deaton laughs, staring out to the lake. "Alright, son."
Scott's face breaks out in a tiny smile at the word and he is content.
