"So." It had all the beginnings of a loaded question. "Alan called here this afternoon. He wanted to make sure you were okay, because you didn't show up this afternoon for your shift." There was so much happening in her kid's life right now; Melissa got that on a level that most parents (even those with normal children) didn't, but they'd had a talk about shirking responsibility too. "Now, I get the need for a mental health day every now and then, but you've gotta let someone know, okay?" She paused, worrying her lip in her teeth. Maybe it was a stupid question, but she had to ask: "--are you okay?"
