Scottuary FIVE

Hello everyone! It is the fifth scottuary! Can you believe it? Amazing!

Scottuary is an annual event put on by @scottappreciation. There is a bingo card and people writing as many Scott fics as we can! @spikeface and @momentofmemory have worked so hard to make this event successful, and over the last four years, there have been 267 Scott-centric, Scott-positive fics released into the world!

For this, the 5th year, a group of us have determined to rec existing fics based on this year's bingo squares every day in February!

But there's more! Keep an eye on this space for more recs, more celebrations and a race to 300! I KNOW we can get that number for sure. BUT, can we beat year 1? There were 107 fics posted in year 1, and I think we could beat that if we worked together!!

Scottuary Fic Recs Day 6: Despair

We all go to school, pretending like nothing's happened, but everyone seems to know. You just walk down the halls and no one's smiling. No one's laughing. You get the feeling that everyone can sense that something's coming. They just don't know what it is, or how bad it's going to be. Every time I feel like I should do something about it, I find myself reaching for my inhaler... Like, I'm going to take a hit of it, and-and come up with some brilliant solution on how to save everyone... But I don't know what to do. (Scott McCall, Lies of Omission) Despair. Such a lovely topic to really dig into what makes a character tick, don't you think? And Scott has some pent-up despair to look at it. Here are some recs exploring that!

Rating: Explicit Pairing: Scott McCall/Stilles Stilinski Words: 63,990 Author Summary: The unforgiving landscape of the boreal forest is the perfect metaphor for Scott's life, ten years after escaping Beacon Hills: cold, quiet, and only barely habitable. An unexpected knock on the door sends the walls he's built crumbling, just in time for the long, harsh winter. Reasons to love the fic: A post-series AU in which an isolated Scott is brought back to life with the help of Stiles. The setting and slow burn are excellent, as are the manifestations of Scott's internal struggles. Note from @scribeoffate: This is one of my all-time favorite sciles fics. It's such a good Scott character study, a good look at their relationship, and it's so visceral and painful- but as mentioned in an earlier rec: with despair comes hope. <3

The light tone highlights the combination of awkwardness and kindness that defines their early relationship.

Rating: Teen and Up Pairing: Gen Words: 2,593 Author summary:

Eyewitness accounts are often extremely unreliable, and emotionally charged events can affect memory retention. No one who was there that night will be able to forget what happened, but the things we individually remember might be very, very different.

However, this story is mine and mine alone. It’s the events that occurred in the library as I remember them.

And I remember them vividly.

Reasons to love the fic: After Scott's secret is revealed during the Beast's attack on the school, Sydney writes a newspaper article about her experience. The author cleverly makes use of in-universe media and outsider POV to demonstrate the impact that Scott has on BHHS. Note from @scribeoffate: This is one of my all-time favorite outsider POV stories. If you like those, you will ADORE this.

The Hounds of Suburbia by orphan_account

Rating: Teen and Up Pairing: Gen Words: 8,253 Author summary: To Erica Reyes, Scott McCall is an oddity. She leads Boyd and Isaac on a mission to get closer to Scott, and in doing so the pack learn some things they didn't expect about their fellow werewolf. Reasons to love the fic: Erica, Boyd, and Isaac learn about Scott's werewolf origin story. The differing circumstances of their turning illuminate Scott's behavior toward Derek and his pack.

Scottuary 5 Recs Day 1: Status Asthmaticus

Rating: Mature Pairing: Gen Words: 2,526 Author Summary: “Liam, don’t do this! I can’t let you kill me.” Scott means it when he says it. He means it as he tries to talk Liam down and explain how Theo’s twisted everything. He means it as he fights for his life, and for Liam’s. He means it until he isn’t sure he does anymore.

Reasons to love the fic: Everyttthing. This one hurts guys and I love it!

Rating: Not Rated Warning: Creator Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings Pairing: Scott McCall/Stiles Stilinski Words: 3,060 Author Summary: “You died, Scott.” It’s said with such misery, and Scott can’t stop the sob that curls in his chest and leaks out of his mouth. “Yeah.” Reasons to love the fic: A fix-it wherein Stiles learns about Scott's death. The author skillfully takes the same grief and anger that Stiles felt in canon and channels it into a healthier, more compassionate reaction.

Rating: General Audiences Pairings: Gen Words: 2,186 Author Summary: Scott is trying to carry the world on his shoulders. Melissa won’t let him. Or A retake of Scott and Melissa’s conversation at the end of “Status Asthmaticus”. Reasons to love the fic: Melissa cares for and encourages Scott following his death. Rather than pushing him harder to lean into his responsibilities, she validates and supports him as a mom who deeply loves her son.

There's always hope. (Allison Argent, Motel California)

Hope is so poignant, such a vital part of Scott as a character (making the scene I'm referencing that much more tragic). Here are two fics that explore hope!

Rating: General Audiences Pairing: Scott McCall/Derek Hale Words: 2,466 Author Summary: A phone call from Melissa brings Derek back. or Even True Alphas fall down sometimes. Reasons to love the fic: Derek returns and shares perspective with Scott to help pull him from a dark place. Both characters are able to discuss their rocky past without judgement, and from their conversations, Scott regains hope.

Rating: Teen and Up Pairing: Gen Words: 3,794 Author Summary: So maybe he wore a Superman costume under his clothes for the entirety of fifth grade, so what? Sometimes intentionally, sometimes organically, Stiles and Scott come together and build a relationship.

Reasons to love the fic: A look at the tough, emotional actions that Scott has to take as a vet. The author ties these moments to Scott's stance on killing, underscoring the nuance of his beliefs.

 (Dying, dying, dying.) Reasons to love the fic: Following Season 5B, Scott and Deaton speak as they perform routine veterinary duties. The author captures the dynamics of Scott and Deaton's relationship beautifully, especially in Deaton's alternating approaches of frankness and subtlty to communicate his support.

Scottuary 5 recs Day 2: Bardo

There's a Tibetan word for it. It's called "Bardo". It literally means "in-between state." The state between life and death." (Kira Yukimura, Anchors)

Oh! Bardo is such a fascinating concept and what better example of that then @momentofmemory's scira fic?

Rating: Teen and Up Pairing: Scott McCall/Kira Yukimura Words: 18,879 Author Summary: Table at his back. Pain. Restraints around his wrists. Kate? Harsh fluorescent lights glaring down, bright like the High Line, isolating like the church. He can’t think.

Or: Scott wakes in an unfamiliar place. It gets worse from there.

Reasons to love the fic: The way I still can't express how much I love this one! This fic did happen to be written expressly for me, but it goes so much further than I could have dreamt. This explores Scott's relationships with so many villains and all so well! It has captive Scott, it has scira! It explores the idea of Bardo and what that might mean to Scott and scira both! It is the fic of my dreams and *it's real.* WHHHAT? I can't ever believe how lucky I am to get to read it.
