‘Y/L/N. Y/L/N!’
A rather loud voice wakes you up. You groan and lift your head from your desk, where you had fallen asleep. As you rub your eyes and run a hand through your hair you see Bones woke you. He’s looking at you with a worried look on his face and a stack of papers in his hands.
‘Sorry, I had to wake you. Jim wanted you to work through these as well, if you have the time for it.’ he says.
‘Thanks.’ you say and you take the papers from his hands and dump them on the growing pile next to you.
‘You okay?’ asks Bones.
‘I’m absolutely fantastic.’ you say sarcastically. ‘Especially with all this extra work Jim gives me. Really amazing.’
‘You know you can just tell him it’s too much, right?’ says Bones.
‘No.’ you say simply. Bones knows damn well you’re too kind to say no to your captain.
‘Okay, well, if you won’t, at least take a break. Those bags underneath your eyes are even bigger than mine. And I don’t think I’ve seen that before.’ says Bones.
‘Yeah, I will.’ you say absently as you start scanning through the papers he handed you. You don’t even hear him say goodbye and walk out the door. You feel like your head is overflowing with information as you go through the papers. You weren’t the type of person to say no often. Which always got you into situations like these.
You stay up for many more hours. While you worked, the night shifts started, and people who just finished their day shift had dinner and one by one they went to their quarters. All of them, except for you.
Hours later, well into the night, you finally get up. Due to the lack of sleep, the letters on the papers appeared blurry, and you figured it was finally time to go to bed. You stretch your arms above your head and feel a satisfying crack in your back.
You yawn as you finally step out of the room you’ve spent hours in. You’re walking through the halls of Enterprise toward the nearest turbo lift. You couldn't wait to get to your quarters so you could go to bed.
When the doors of the turbo lift open you almost slam into the person that emerges from it. When you look up you see it’s the one person you don’t want to see right now.
‘Oh, hey! I was just looking for you, Y/N, I thought I gave Bones all the papers but apparently I missed a few. Can you handle a few more?’ says Jim. You look at him and seriously consider saying no. But he looks tired as well, and so you smile briefly and nod. ‘Sure. Just put them on my desk and I’ll take a look at them.’ you say.
‘You’re the best, Y/N!’ says Jim and he walks away.
When you get in the turbo lift you swallow thickly and look upwards to prevent the tears from falling. You could have just said no. You could have explained to him that it’s too much and you can’t handle it. Why didn’t you just say no?
Your tired legs carry you all the way to your quarters. You raise your hand to open the door, but hesitate mid-air. The door to your quarters remains locked as you turn around and start to walk back toward the turbo lift.
As the turbo lift takes you to the floor you want to be, you anxiously bite your nails, still fighting the tears. You keep your fingers crossed, hoping you won’t run into anyone. Despite being tired as hell, you almost run through the halls.
You've walked this route so many times. You knew Scotty’s shift ended hours ago. And unlike you, he didn’t stay up for several hours after that to finish his work.
No one on the crew knew exactly how it happened, but somewhere over a year ago the strong friendship you had with Scotty blossomed into something more than a friendship. Neither of you had officially “asked” one another, but everyone on the ship knew you were a thing.
When you reach Scotty’s quarters, you impatiently knock on the door. You didn’t even care he’s probably asleep. It takes him a while to open the doors. When he does, it’s obvious you woke him like Bones woke you. Scotty’s hair is messy, his eyes are still half closed and he’s in his pyjamas.
‘Y/N?’ he says in a sleepy voice. ‘What are you doing here? Aren’t you-’ You cut him off by wrapping your arms around him and burying your face in his chest. You try to be silent but he can still hear the sobs escaping your mouth.
Scotty takes a few steps backward into his quarters, and he closes the door. He rubs circles on your back as he holds you close. His shirt is getting soaked with your tears, but he doesn’t mind. He waits for you to pull back and looks you in your eyes.
‘What happened?’ he says in a soft voice.
‘It’s too much. I can never finish all of it. And Jim’s only giving me more work to do.’ you say. Scotty lets go of you and you whine softly, but he takes your hand in his and guides you to his bed where the two of you lay down.
‘You know you can just say no to him, right? Even if he’s your captain.’ says Scotty.
‘That’s exactly what Bones said when he woke me.’ you say and you move closer to Scotty and tighten your grip on him.
‘Just try not to worry about it. Get some sleep, my shift starts later than usually and I think you deserve to sleep in.’ says Scotty, turning off the lights.
‘I don’t have time to sleep in, Scotty.’ you point out, and you think about the pile of papers on your desk.
‘Well, then I’ll just keep you in my arms until I decide you can get up.’ says Scotty and you smile.
‘Thank you.’ you mumble as you feel your eyes getting heavier and heavier.
‘Anything for you. If you’re happy, I’m happy. We all get overwhelmed by the pressure sometimes, it’s okay.’ says Scotty.
‘Hmm.’ you mumble. ‘Thanks. Goodnight Scotty.’
‘Goodnight sweetheart.’ says Scotty.
A/N: I hope you like it!! My one word requests are currently open. It ends October 1st so make sure to send me an ask if you want a one word request. Check my post about it for more information.
‘’Three more moves and I will finally beat you for once.’’ You calculated how to take Christine’s king after losing four times straight. You were both skilled at chess but you played more for fun. You got tired and asked Carol to advise you about your moves beforehand. Now she was watching you play being proud of how well you followed her advice.
‘’See (Y/N), you can be an extremely difficult opponent when you focus on the game. Queen to C4.’’ Christine studied the board anticipating your next move.
‘’I am playing to enjoy my free time. I am not competitive like the rest of you. Yesterday Leonard was staring me down to distract me while we were playing. And that’s part of what I'm doing now. Rook to B6. Check.’’
After you won the game you thank Carol for her help.
‘’Wait, was she helping you the whole time? And you left to play by myself?’’ Christine pretending to be annoyed by her friend’s betrayal.
‘’No, she was just my mentor. I wanted to win at least once this week. To gain some confidence before the mission on Friday. I haven’t been on such an important mission before and I am a little worried.’’
‘’Don’t worry about it, Ensign. You will have the best people there with you. Jim said taking a seat next to you with Jaylah. You hadn’t noticed them earlier and he scared you a little.
‘’I know that Jaylah will protect both you and Scotty while away. And Lieutenant Collins knows what to do in the event of hostiles, he has been attacked once and beat them. There is nothing to worry about.’’ His reassuring words thought fell on deaf ears because right at that moment the people he was talking about entered the room. And all you did was to stare at the man you had fallen in love with since you started working at the enterprise, Montgomery Scott. You met in your first week when he came by your room to check on Jaylah, your roommate, who had broken her arm. She was asleep at the time so you made sure Scotty knew you were taking care of his friend. His charm and his caring personality are what drew you to him and in a few months, you ended up daydreaming about dating him.
‘’Are you listening to me?’’ Jim interrupted your thoughts.
‘’No sorry. What were you saying?’’ You turned to face the captain and give him your undivided attention.
‘’Nothing important. Now, I’m pretty sure I know why you weren’t paying attention to me.’’ He smiled knowingly at you.
‘’You know?’’ You thought you had kept your crush a secret from everyone.
‘’It’s obvious (Y/N). You are staring that I would try to believe you are trying to read his mind.’’
‘’Please don’t tell him anything. I will try to find the perfect opportunity to confess my feelings myself.’’
‘’Of course, don’t worry about it. I promise to say nothing. Now, you should go get everything ready for your mission.’’ He watched you leave and took another look at the men across the room. Scotty was still talking to Lieutenant Collins about something, the chief engineer was obviously passionate about while the other man seemed a little bored. At that moment Jim felt happy he only promised not to talk but you didn’t say anything about meddling. So, he came up with a plan to help you find your opportunity.
For the next few months, it was like someone was trying to sabotage your changes with Scotty. You barely saw him and when you spotted him somewhere he was always busy. At first, you didn’t think anything of it, still, you began getting worried. What if Jim had told him about your feeling and he was afraid to reject you?
On top of that, you weren’t sent with him on missions anymore. It was like Jim thought you and Collins made a good team you were sent everywhere together. When a linguist and an engineer were needed someone, it was always the two of you. You started getting sick of seeing his face. Not that he wasn’t attractive still you missed the time you get to spend with Scotty. You would talk about the ship, your families or your home back to Earth. You knew it would be a stupid decision to question the captain but you thought that asking him about it wouldn’t hurt. Maybe after the next mission.
So, when a spaceship crashed, you found yourself on the rescue team. You were sent to communicate with any survivors so they will aboard the ship and then allow the doctors to treat them.
The mission was hard but you and the rest of the team managed to bring all the survivors on board. The engineers that were on the team were able to salvage some of the spaceship’s part in order to be included in making the new one for the crew. You were proud of yourself since it was a major success and you finally used some of the languages that your supervisor had taught you.
However, the bliss you felt from completing the mission didn’t distract you from the conversation you wanted to have with the captain. You just had to make sure to voice everything like you wanted to gain experience working with some other members too and not as a complaint against lieutenant Collins.
‘’Hey (Y/N) congratulations on the mission today. All our patients seem to feel at ease with you and were thankful they could communicate with someone. Great job.’’ Christine complimented you.
‘’Thanks Chris, I appreciate it. Listen, I can’t talk right now and I bet you still have a lot of work. Do you mind if we talk about this over breakfast tomorrow?’’ Your eyes were once on her and once scanning the corridor for Jim.
‘’Of course (Y/N), are you looking for something?’’
‘’Yes, Jim, have you seen him?’’
‘’He was just here to be briefed by doctor McCoy about the patients. He said he was going to his quarters to work on something.’’
‘’Thank you, Chris. I will see if I can find him there.’’
Just as your friend mentioned Jim was in his quarters making sure all the parts of the crashed ship had been properly cataloged to be sent back so they can be part of the new ship. He was done when you showed up and asked to talk to him.
‘’(Y/N) just the person I wanted to see. One of them to be exact. I will plan a little celebration for our mission when the crew of the USS Gladiator is all healed. And I would love to honor all the team who achieved it. What do you day?’’ He motioned you to sit with him on the couch.
‘’That would lovely both of us and for them. To left their spirit a little. However, there is something I would like to discuss with you. I don’t want you to take this personally or as a complaint. Just as a question.’’ You paused trying to find the right words even if you had practiced this in your head all the way. Jim didn’t interrupt you, he was curious and let you speak when you were ready.
‘’Is there a reason I’m always on away missions with the same people? I mean, I could learn some more things if you change the structure of the teams.’’ You looked hopefully at him hoping he would agree with you.
‘’I see your point and I do believe it’s a good strategy. But I would hate to break you and Collins apart. You seem to work fine together and honestly, I am expecting a thank you for pairing the two of you together for so long.’’
‘’Why would I thank you, Jim? It’s not like he is the best engineer to work with. I would thank you if you paired me up with Scotty because he is the best, or with any of my friends.’’
‘’What do you mean? I pair you with him so you can talk about how you are feeling. You told me you liked him.’’ You both looked confused by his conversation.
‘’I never said that. What are you talking about?’’
‘’Back before your first difficult away mission. Don’t you remember? I was trying to ease your concerns and you totally blew me off to stare at him.’’
That day came to your mind and you realized what had happened.
‘’Oh, my God Jim, I can’t believe this. I wasn't talking about him. If you remember that scene clearly, he didn’t enter the room alone.’’
‘’Yes, he was with... He tried to picture the scene. ‘’Scotty. He is the one you were talking about?’’
‘’Yes. I have been in love with him since my first week here. Please tell me you are the only person on the enterprise who knows about my apparent crush on Collins. You haven’t told him anything, have you?’’ You started panicking at the prospect of him believing you like him.
‘’No don’t worry. I haven’t told Collins anything about it. You should probably talk to Scotty though. With how much time you have spent with someone else he might have gotten the same idea I had.’’
‘’Jim you are absolutely right. I will go to talk to Scotty right now. Also, I'm not going to be able to have dinner with you tonight. I might end up making other plans.’’
‘’Of course, Ensign, just make sure you thank me later for my help.’’ You gave him an annoyed look. ‘’For making you admit your feelings by matchmaking you with another.’’ He giggled as you blew him a kiss and left to find your future boyfriend. However, what he failed to mention was that Scotty knew about his matchmaking plans from the beginning. He even helped execute some of them.
When you made it to engineering, Scotty was filing the reports from a previous away mission.
‘’Ensign (Y/LN), can I help you with something? I see here that your mission was successful. Congratulations on communicating so well with the survivors of the crash. I am sure Lieutenant Uhura must be proud of you.’’
‘’She is, all the survivors seem to trust me enough to allow me to translate the doctors that are treating them.’’ You were excited about helping those poor people. However, your nerves were overwhelming.
‘’And I'm sure you worked perfectly with lieutenant Collins.’’ You were too focused on what you wanted to tell him to notice the tone of his voice.
‘’We worked well together. But I’m sure you mentioned it because you were aware of Jim’s plans, right?’’ His eyes fell worrying you have figured out he was hoping to be in Collins’ position. However, you thought he was just sorry for helping Jim. He nodded without saying anything out of fear that his voice would crack.
‘’Well… that shows us that even though he is a certified genius our captain can sometimes be a little dense.’’ You approached Scotty and stood in front of him.
‘’He was right about me having feelings for someone. Just got the person wrong.’’ You hoped that you had given him enough clues to realize what you were implying.
‘’What do you mean? Who is the right person?’’ He dared to feel hope even after telling himself for months that you wouldn’t look at him.
‘’A beautiful guy who can always make me feel safe around him. Who makes sure I’m comfortable after any jump and who once had to carry me to the med bay. Who has an amazing sense of humor and the most adorable accent I have ever heard. Do you believe he will ever let me be more than just friends?’’ You looked into his eyes to determine the answer yet he beat you to it.
‘’Absolutely, he would a fool not to. Only an idiot would deny the opportunity to date such a beautiful creature. One that can brighten up the room with their presence and who can be reasonable even when angry. And I would like to know if that person would like to have dinner with me.’’ He shyly reached for your hand.
‘’Of course, I would. Let me change clothes and I will meet you in the dining hall.’’ You gave him a kiss on the cheek and left. You walked fast to your room and he stayed touching the area your lips were just on, both of you with wide smiles on your faces.
Prompt: You don’t have to be afraid x Scotty For: Anon
Rating: T
Word Count: 566
It wasn't like you to be afraid. Fear wasn't in your nature, it had been forced out at a young age. Being Jim's sibling meant you had gotten into all sorts of trouble when you were kids. It meant that whatever scheme he pulled, whatever trouble he'd gotten into, you were there right beside him. That same sense of loyalty to your brother had led you to join Starfleet alongside your brother. And that same sense of loyalty had led you to be a part of every dumb decision that he had ever made. It didn't matter what Spock, McCoy, or even Scotty who had been your best friend, said. No matter what anyone told you, you would stand by Kirk throughout everything.
But now you would be standing alone.
It wasn't unusual for Jim to put his life at risk. It wasn't unusual for him to be an idiot. It was unusual for him to not escape deadly situations. It was unusual for him to be killed doing one of his stupid acts as captain.
But he had done a stupid act and suffered for it. He had died for it.
He realigned the warp core and died. You were grateful for what realigning the warp core meant but hated that it also meant your brothers death. No one member of the crew was unaffected by your brothers death and Scotty was the first person to seek you out to make sure you were ok. Your needs were placed over his.
You hadn't wanted to talk, instead you left to go to your room to mourn alone. You knew that you were needed on the bridge, that there was still a fight going on but you couldn't bring yourself to be apart of it in that moment. And you were grateful when no one asked you. They were aware of your needing time to process the loss of someone so close. He was friend and family to all but a blood relative to you. He was the person who had taken care of you throughout your life and then suddenly he was gone.
You had locked yourself in your room not saying that you didn't want to be disturbed but also thinking that it was obvious that you wouldn't want to. The banging on your door was completely unwanted even if it was Scotty shouting on the other side.
Wrenching open the door you glared at him, angered even more when he dragged you to the MedBay where Bones was sitting watching a tribble. A revived tribble. A tribble that was once dead and was now alive which meant that your brother could be revived. Or at least that's what you hoped Bones was thinking.
"Khan's blood. Some kind of regenerative property. It might work." Leonard spoke, words jumbled together as he was just as stunned as you were.
"But what if it doesn't work on Jim. What if it doesn't work"
Scotty wrapped an arm around your shoulder, "You don't have to be afraid. It's gonna work. Jim's gonna be back. You're gonna get your brother back"
You were afraid, but you had people standing beside you who would help you through it all. Jim would be alive and walking again. Making terrible decisions once more, and you'd be right at his side, complaining but going along with whatever your brother had in mind.
It was the first time in three weeks that both you and your boyfriend didn’t have to work during the evening. Everything in engineering seemed to work fine and Scotty was optimistic that Jaylah could handle everything on her own. Because of that, he proposed a date in his room so you can relax, play some games and maybe watch a movie afterward. He had borrowed some board games from the recreation deck that was both of your favorites.
You had beaten him in chess twice before decided to play geography. The game was easy for you since you knew millions of places on every planet. However, your mind got stuck and couldn’t think of a place starting with W and you forfeited.
‘’I finally won at this game. You are so good at this I sometimes think you were put in the wrong division and you should become a navigator instead of working with me.’’ Scotty gave you a hug to make sure you weren’t mad about losing.
‘’Maybe I could be a good navigator like my dad was. But I wouldn’t change working with you for anything. We are a great team.’’ You gave him a kiss and put your head on his shoulder.
‘’When you are not playing pranks on me, yes, we are. Don’t think for a second that I forgot what you pulled on me when you first started working here.’’
‘’You didn’t think it was funny? Because everyone else did. And it was just so we can laugh, we didn’t mean to embarrass you or anything.’’
‘’You didn’t embarrass me, love, I just started panicking thinking how many other things I have missed. You came to my station on the first day of your job and pretended to be working there for two years. I thought I were losing my mind.’’ He wasn’t angry about it at all but even after six months, he was still planning a revenge. The one he tried to pull on you one month after the incident turned out to him failing and you rescuing him which only made both of you realize your attraction toward each other.
Out of the blue while you were reminiscing a loud noise made you jump.
‘’What is it now? It’s coming from that wall over there.’’ Scotty got up to check. He wished it was something he could easily fix.
‘’I can’t be sure that I believe it’s coming from the air conditioning unit sweetheart.’’ Turned out you were right and Scotty took his tools to repair it.
After a few minutes, the room was blazing hot and you felt like you were melting.
‘’I feel like I am of no use here to you since you are clearly handing it. So, I am going to leave you to your work. Goodbye Scotty, I'm not coming back until you fix this.’’ You left not noticing the disappointment in his eyes for letting him suffer alone in the heat. He had hoped you would at least ask him if he was ok or maybe get him some needed water to cool off.
Stepping out of the furnace of a room your mind became clear. Realizing how awful you had reacted to the problem and how poorly you treated Scotty. He had tried so hard to plan a perfect for both of you and after a slight obstacle, you abandoned him. The best way to make it up was to bring reinforcements that you bring him comfort.
‘’What are you doing here? I thought you and Scotty had plans tonight.’’ Uhura asked you when she noticed you at the dining hall. ‘’Did something happen and you are eating alone now?’’
‘’The air condition in the room was busted and Monty is trying to fix it. I thought since he is suffering already he deserved refreshing food and drinks. I would hate to see him get a heat stroke.’’ She nodded at you and helped you pick and carry all the things to your boyfriend’s room.
When he opened the door, the room was still hot and he was drenched in sweat.
‘’I thought about it and leaving you to suffer alone is out of the question. Take a break to enjoy the food I brought you. I will take a look at the problem and when you are done we can work on it together if you want.’’ He ended up just drinking some water and joining you. Turned out you were a great team so it was fixed within minutes.
‘’Thank you so much for your help (Y/N) and for coming back. Let me take a quick shower and then we can finish off our dinner while watching a movie.’’ You had a better idea and joined him in the shower so you can spend the night the way you loved, wearing his clothes.
Days like today were the ones that made you regret dating Scotty. Well, not dating Scotty in particular, just an engineer. You being a doctor were usually the one with the odd hours but today Scotty had repairs to do and you finished with your patients earlier than anticipated. Normally you’d go back to your room and rest or wait for a call that you were needed back in the MedBay but today you just wanted to spend time with your boyfriend.
Asking around the other engineers told you where you could find him, hunched over and examining some part of the ship that you knew nothing about. He saw you come up beside him and waved at you before returning to fixing whatever the thing was. You watched him work for a few minutes, not anticipating the extent of the work the ship apparently needed before Scotty spoke up.
“Shouldn’t you be with patients?”
“I’m done for the day. Bones still has a few appointments and the others can call me if he needs me. Figured I’d come see you.”
“Hate to disappoint you but its busy today. Lots to check”
“Can’t you take a break. Get one of the other engineers to do it?” you asked.
“No, this has to be done. I’ve got to do it”
You frowned but you knew what would get him to take a break.
“You sure you can’t get someone to take over. I’ve got a bottle of scotch in my room.
He smirked, “Don’t tempt me”
“I’m not tempting but if your sure you can’t take a break, guess I’ll just pour myself a drink alone. Or I could invite someone else. Maybe Bones would like a drink.”
“The man wouldn’t know how to appreciate good scotch” Scotty grumbled, slowly standing up.
“That mean you’ll take a break?” you grinned.
“Give me twenty minutes to check on everything and I’ll meet you there” he spoke, kissing your cheek.
