Justice Thomas on jury discrimination: ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It is tough to imagine a more egregious case of jury discrimination than Foster v. Chatman. The prosecutor’s office in this Georgia death penalty case struck every single black member of the jury pool. They made four copies of a list of prospective jurors, highlighting every African-American on the list in green next to a legend indicating that such highlighting “represents Blacks.” An investigator working for the prosecution advised prosecutors that “if it comes down to having to pick one of the black jurors,” then one in particular “might be okay.” A note on one of the prosecution’s internal documents suggested that the office did not want a particular juror to be seated because of the juror’s membership in a “Black Church.”
On Scalia
What do you do when someone who vehemently tries to oppress you, your family and your friends dies? Should you jump for joy? Should you respectfully wait for the family to bury their dead?
Scalia was a complex man. He was intelligent, terribly so, yet often stood on the opposite side of progress. He pledged to interpret the Constitution, but interpreted it dead. This guy had a family that he loved and cared about, but he prevented many other Americans from doing the same. Scalia stood for the very best and the very worst of America. He was a blatant racist, he sought to regulate women’s bodies without their permission and he was staunchly against the expression of love. Yet, he was friends with Ruth Bader Ginsberg and despite their difference in ideals, they remained friends to the end.
To me and my family, this man was terrible. I was often angry, when I was younger, at how someone so powerful could be so closed minded. His ignorance was a painful thing and to be quite frank, he really did hurt me. He and his decisions hurt me deeply. When I think of his death, I am disgusted at the political hardball going around it. Why can’t they just bury the poor man? But in a similar, more awful way, I am glad he is not serving on the Court anymore. The SCOUTS will be much better without him.
I don’t know. I guess I am mostly happysad. I don’t think Scalia was evil, just wrong. I don’t know whether to jump for joy and sing, “DING DONG THE WITCH IS DEAD!” or just be quiet. I just don’t know.
(also btw, his stupid ruling on the second amendment was just dumb. he says he was a strict constructionist but if he was there would have been judicial precedent for that kind of thing. also, his interpretation of the constitution as dead is just stoooooopiiidd. if it was dead, they why would the founding fathers bother to include amendments???? ughhhhh that guy just pissed me off so much)
