SCPitt: SCP-429 Clockwork Teleporter
SCP wiki | Master SCPitt post
Transport that cost you some of your time
Description
429 gearbox glove/wrist band design to fit right hand, with total of 7 different controls on it that user is able to understood the moment he wears it (User only understand it internally, unable to explain to someone else). When User visualize location and adjust the controls of 429, base on their new-granted understanding, they can teleport to that visualized location.
Even thought from outside perspective the teleportation seem instantaneous, from user perspective, when he is teleporting his body is in the state of blind and paralysis, and the teleportation progress takes around the same time as going directly to designed point with speed of 6-10 km/h.
User body in that state is still affected by time so things like aging, hunger, thirst, sickness, and other natural body phenomena will still go forward with user only able to sustain them after teleportation (assuming he didn’t teleport far enough to die between teleportation).
Pros:
Teleportation: Obvious and biggest pro is teleportation. This have huge, long and short transportation practicality. Because of the time limbo it is more wise to generally try to use 429 for short distances, rather than long but if user will use occasionally long ones, aware of his own limits, it’s should be ok.
Item Teleportation: Entry didn’t support this directly but it seem when teleporting 429 also teleports things close to user, there is no mention of user teleporting without clothes, and we know he teleports with 429, so potentially teleporting with bag of groceries from shop to your house should be possible too, we don’t know limit thought. Can user teleport living being that he holds/touch? Does size or mass matter or just the fact that user holds them, does it have to be separated or could user teleport road sign even if embedded to the ground?
Local Time: 429 have small clock on itself that after every teleportation adjust to local time it is in. That’s… not super helpful, 429 shouldn’t be used on the distances as far as different time zones but… I mean it is still advantage, it can be helpful so small but still pro.
Cons:
Time ticking: The main con of this SCP is the individual time of teleportation, like it was said; user body still aging, and getting hungry as we flying paralyzed and blind through the ‘limbo’ with speed of 6-10 km/h. Article advice to not teleport anywhere beyond 510 km away due to risk of dehydration, this number can be smaller depending on personal wellbeing. 6-10 km/h is not very fast, like I say it is better to use 429 on shorter distances as anywhere farther you could probably get faster (from your own perspective) with car, public transport, or even bike. Before long teleportation it is important to check if you fell well, hydrated and well feed, I would also strongly recommend to not teleport when sick due to any lack of helping yourself in the middle of teleportation in case of emergency.
Aging: Continuing previous point, the aging progress is still present when teleporting, one can say it’s not a problem as it doesn’t take that much but… 6-10 km/h is average 8 km/h lets say you work 20 km away 5 days in week you teleport in and out of work to home, teleportation takes you 2,5 hour so 5 in total (both ways), 5 days a week * 5 hour = 25, 25 * 52 (weeks in year) = 1300 hours = 54 days. 7 potential years of this work and you wasted a year and a little (378 days), I know it’s still may not seen like a lot but that was hypothetical that assumed user worked for 5 days not 7, he works only 20 km away not farther, and that 429 move him with speed of 8 km/h not 7 or 6, and I’m not even counting use of 429 outside of work. Obviously there is also a chance that you work even less than 5 days a week, closer, and move with speed closer to 10 k/m but all it’s hypothetical and if can, 429 should be use sparingly to not accumulate wasting time. It’s important to note that supposed creator of 429 died of old age after 9 years of excessive use, we don’t know his original age, but still it is important to not overdose 429.
Mental issues: Entry didn’t mention anything about how prolonged use of 429 can cause metal problems but I image that staying paralyzed, blind and powerless for possible hours can not have best mental outcomes, especially for people already suffering with schizophrenia or claustrophobia. I would advice not to use 429 if you have any of similar condition especially with purpose of long distance teleportation.
Discreetly: Small con but 429 being some kind of steampunk looking wrist band with excessive clockwork mechanism can pull some confused eyes on you. Noting to big to worry about, I feel like most people would assume that you just really like steampunk or cosplay someone rather than having some supernatural teleporting mechanism worth stealing, but you never know.
Other
“Visualization”: Entry says “If the subject visualises a location and follows their instinctual understanding to adjust the controls, the wearer will disappear from their current location and simultaneously appear at the visualised location.” But that’s kinda… vague? Like what does ‘visualizes’ (just noticed that entry spelled “visualizes” wrong) mean in this context? If I show someone picture of place that he have no idea where is or what is could he still teleport there? If user visualize a not direct place like just ‘forest’ in general, would he teleport to random forest? Closest forest? Forest that most resemble his vison? What if I show user picture of a place that no longer exit? Will he teleport to it’s ruin? Teleport in place that most resemble the place in picture even if it’s different place? Or teleport in time? Same what if I show fictional picture? Can user teleport to Hogwarts? I assume that time or fiction teleportation will not happen but still curious what are limits and rules of “visualization”.
Modification?: When user wears 429 he gains instinctive understanding of its operation, and the 429 have clock that updates local time every time user teleports, even thought 429 is not fit to teleport to distances as far as other time zones, but that doesn’t mean it weren’t meant to achieve it some day, and with instinctive understanding of its operation question remains… can user modify it for this purpose? Messing with SCP is rarely good idea, and 429 proved that messing with it without understand it’s controls can teleport you for 8 months even thought traveling only ~2km, there is a chance that sticking your fingers inside 429 can result in similar if not worse punishment, but there is a chance to fix it’s biggest flaws and quicken personal teleportation speed.
Biological (or any) waste: What’s happens when in the middle of limbo you want to… go to the bathroom? Like it is possible right? Unless paralysis prevents any waste to go off, but if not… where would that waste go? Actually where anything would go? Like if you drop something when in limbo either your waste or groceries, would they fall down? Where? Will they still teleport with you? I feel like those are important questions, unfortunately unanswered.
Conclusion
It’s worth it, one of the best SCP, and possibly the best when it comes to personal transportation. There are flaws and it’s advised to not use it for long distances and not to intensely but from what I saw this could really be one if not the best ‘teleport for personal use’ SCP.
