Cane Creek SCR-5
I guess Cane Creek is really best known for their headsets, which are good. So when I was forced to abandon STI shifters for barcons, I jumped at the available pair of Cane Creek SCR-5 that Jalnar had. The internet does confirm my suspicion that these are indeed Tektro R200 levers, so the same will apply.
With cantilever brakes it was nice to have the Campagnolo-style release, however I did find installation and the ergonomics to be far from perfect. Installation was hard because the rubber hoods are incredibly difficult to pull back, I can’t imagine what changing hoods would be like. More importantly, however, the comfort of the hood is not great. The top is quite square, which looks good on the bike, but doesn’t feel particularly good on my hands. GCN approved of the SRAM eTap’s reduced diameter, and I am quite fond of the older Shimano RX100/RSX hoods for this reason. Having a big square block with a reduced “horn” proved to be pretty uncomfortable, as well as looking a bit odd, even with aero/flattened bar-tops.
Braking ergonomics are ok. Nothing great and no real problem with them.
Mechanically I did have one big issue. The main pivot pin seems to not be held in by anything other than pressure. Shimano’s STI have a grub screw going into a slot on the pivot pin. On the SCR-5 the pin would wander, and I’d have to push it back in by a couple of millimetres a couple of times per day! I do consider this to be a safety issue.
