(Behind the scenes - unedited)
all shot on fuji Provia 100F transparency film during the making of the film. Interesting to have this as a document, to see the comparison between the still and moving renditions of these scenes
still trying to work out whether I should project or display my project on a tv with headphones? Both have benefits but both engage the audience in a very different way.
Project Title How did this develop and what was involved in the decision making process? The title of my short film was the first thing that came to me when deciding to do a project on male depression. The title LADS is such a good title as it not only highlights one of the key features that surrounds male depression. Alongside this the term lads referring to a group of young men really symbolises the demographic i am trying to represent. These two factors alone made choosing my title a very simple job. Other then Lads there were a couple of ideas that i rejected. One of them was to be the name of my main actor. However i didn’t feel as if this would be best for the project or the vision i had for the short film.
Subject Reflect on the subject matter of your project. My subject matter was male depression. A subject that has recently been in the mainstream media, with many pieces arising. It is also a less spoke about topic as there is a stigma surrounding men and their feelings, as if men shouldn’t show them. One of the aspects of male depression the i wanted to get at is the lack of communication about certain feelings. This lack of communication amongst men is derived from cultural wrong doing, in saying that boys don’t cry. This therefore develops a fear or determination to show no weakness. IN the long run this is detrimental to the mental health of young men.
Visual Research Reflect on how key photographers / visual artists who are relevant to your project research have impacted upon the development of your project? Explain how they influenced your approach and what you learned from them. through visual research i was heavily influenced by films more then any other pieces of work. One of these films was trainspotting. For me the way Danny Boyle portrays the degected characters within this film, using natural dim lighting, alongside blue mood lighting really projects to the viewer the emotions that are portrayed on the screen. The other film that influenced my approach is Wes Anderson’s Royal tenenbnums!!!! With one scene particularly in mind, when one of the sons try to commit suicide. The colouring used in that scene is so powerful, and when composure of each scene creates a photographic feel to every frame. Alongside these films i also looked into pieces of classical art and how colour is used to depict emotion. One painting inperticular caught my eye. This was The Old Guitarist is an oil painting by Pablo Picasso. This piece of art really captures the raw emotion of depression and highlighted to me the colour palette i should try to create when filming.
These are a couple of scenes in which it shows my character progression through the day.

Filling out the Negative report sheets for the lab scanner was possibly one of the dullest and most repetitive tasks I've ever set myself but it seemed worth the trouble...
