Another discussion question is “does anyone really care about corks vs. screwcaps, in terms of wine bottle closure?” There’s a nice article here on Wine Folly, if you want to consider the pros and cons, but really, I think as long as the wine’s freshness is properly preserved, then whatever works best should be used.
Sure, for a nice $30+ bottle you want to age, the ability for a natural cork to “breathe” is nice, but even then, you still have about a 1/20 chance of getting a bad cork.
Plus, as the article explains, lots of cheaper wines use sub-par natural-synthetic alternative corks to cut costs, so you’re not getting the real thing anyway. I think the future of table wines includes many ways to store wine (e.g. cans and bottles) and seal wine (e.g. screwcaps).
