"Can you please just...hold me? For a little bit?"
Jonathan sighed quietly and put his book down, looking up at Edward who was hovering next to him.
“Why?” Jonathan gave Edward a critical once over before making eye contact with him. “I’m in the middle of something.”
“I know,” Edward said quietly, “but I just... had a bad day and...”
He trailed off and gave Jonathan a pleading look.
“Fine,” Jonathan sighed and scooted over on the couch to make room for Edward, patting the seat next to him.
Edward smiled, exhausted relief evident on his face before he plopped down on the couch and immediately leaned against Jonathan. Jonathan stiffened at first, a bit uncomfortable at the physical contact despite saying it was ok. He quickly relaxed after the initial shock however and wrapped an arm loosely over Edward’s shoulders.
“Do you want to talk about what happened?” he asked.
“No,” Edward shook his head. “I’d rather forget I ever happened.”
“Edward, you know that you can’t keep avoiding things,” Jonathan reminded him. It was a near constant habit of Edward’s, to ignore or block out anything that caused even a hint of distress. At this point Jonathan even wondered if it was done unconsciously due to how often Edward did it. Certainly it was not the most healthy of ways to deal with things, and Jonathan worried.
“You tell me every time I say that,” Edward said, annoyance edging his tone.
“I just worry about you,” Jonathan shrugged and Edward let out a mewl of protest at the movement.
“I know,” Edward said, situating himself so he was more comfortable with resting his head on Jonathan’s shoulder. He ran his hand up and down Jonathan’s upper thigh absentmindedly. “I’m alright though, trust me.”
“I do,” Jonathan said, “trust you that is.”
“Good,” Edward turned his head and kissed Jonathan’s neck lightly. “I trust you too.”
‘We’ll see how long that lasts.’
Jonathan inwardly flinched at the intrusive thought, who he knew to be Scarecrow. Jonathan didn’t need his alter to ruin a moment such as this. He’d never willingly betray Edward’s trust, he meant too much to Jonathan for that to happen. Unfortunately Scarecrow didn’t hold that same level of respect towards Edward.
“Jonathan?”
“Hm?” Jonathan looked down at Edward who was peering up at him.
“Are you ok?” Concern shone in Edward’s eyes.
“Yeah,” Jonathan said, “don’t worry about it.”
“Okay.” Edward eyed Jonathan suspiciously, sensing something was up, but he wasn’t going to push it if Jonathan wasn’t willing to share. Not yet anyway.
Jonathan silently thanked Edward for not pushing things. He didn’t want to deal with whatever conversation would’ve happened if he’d told Edward what Scarecrow said. Call him a hypocrite but he didn’t want to ruin the moment or cause Edward more distress on top of what he was already experiencing. He could deal with Scarecrow later. For now he just wanted to relax without much worry about what happened next.
