The Calling of Matthew
Matthew 9:9-12
All Jesus said to Matthew was “Follow me”. Jesus didn’t do some miraculous miracle to get his attention. But all Jesus did was that He came Matthew where he was at and told Matthew to follow Him. Mathew had to option to either stay where he was at or follow Jesus.
That’s what Jesus is doing for all of us, He sees us where we are at and invites us to follow Him. We can be like Matthew and get up from our day-to-day life and fellowship with Him. Or just stay where we are at. Matthew didn’t need a personal miracle, He knew that the invite alone was enough to change His life and follow in Christ’s footsteps.
The other thing I like about this scripture is that when Matthew had dinner with Jesus, it wasn’t just him. It was “many” tax collectors and so called “sinners” that fellowshipped as well.
When we follow Jesus, we don’t just bring ourselves, but we bring people who are walking the same life as us... For example, in our workplaces, we would fellowship with them. In our school, we would fellowship with them. In our sport teams or whatever else, we would fellowship with them, to bring them to hang out with Christ and see who He is.
We aren’t to walk this life alone. It’s meant to be that we follow Him and bring along others to follow Him too.
That’s our calling, as much as it is Matthew’s.
