RIP Leon Russell. When I was just a lad I heard, in my mind's ear, the vibes of Rolling Stones, Humble Pie, Rod Stewart, Tony Joe White, early Allman Brothers, Waylon Jennings, Elton John, Joe Cocker, Todd Rundgren, and a bunch of lesser lights as basically all one thing. That may have been an untrained ear getting everything from a transistor radio, or it may have had something to do with this guy. I bet two thirds of my friends reading this have never heard of him. Google that and prepare to be amazed. Hint: During the time when Elton John was working out his own sound and style, he described Russel's compositions, piano style, and vocal phrasing as "everything I adored."
