Fall Break is a long weekend where students enjoy some fall weather and a take a break from classes. Since northern Michigan is a little bit too far to travel in such a short period of time, my teammate, Ella (left), graciously opened her home in Cranston, Rhode Island to myself and our teammate, Kristin (middle) for fall break! It was a quintessential autumn experience and I loved every second of it!
Ella wanted to show us all of her favourite places in Rhode Island. She is a very passionate “Rhody,” which made Kris and I very excited to go to this state we had heard so much about haha!
When we first arrived, we went straight to Ella’s high school’s football game which was just ending. Afterwards, we met up with some of her friends and went to a nearby Applebees’s!
The next day, we went to East Matunuck State Beach and took some photos and picked up some very pretty rocks! It was very windy.
Then we went to a pumpkin patch farm! It was so exciting for me, as someone who grew up in Florida, to experience these traditional “fall” activities in autumn weather! We went on a hay ride (pictured here), got lost in a corn maze, and even shot corn out of a “Corn Canon!” We all left with a little pumpkin to take to our house rooms.
The next day was spent driving and exploring some more parts of Rhode Island. I never knew how many colleges are packed into one little state!! We had some delicious food and enjoyed seeing other college lively campuses.
That night, we went back to Ella’s high school to watch “The City Cup,” an annual soccer game between Cranston’s rival high schools. It was so much fun and so intense!! Ella’s high school ended up winning (woot woot!!) and I also won because I got to have some delicious cheese fries while watching the match!
The next day, we walked around Ella’s neighbourhood, enjoying the beautiful weather. Then it was time to return to Smith. Overall, Fall Break is exactly that: a break in the fall. There are so many ways to experience Fall Break but I definitely loved spending mine with friends in Rhode Island!
One of Smith’s greatest traditions is Mountain Day. One day a year, President McCartney decides that it is too beautiful of a day to have classes! So classes are cancelled and many students spend their time apple picking and baking!
My day started at 6am in the weight room with my swim team. Lift practice ends at 7am, when the Mountain Day bells are to be rung if it is truly Mountain Day. We couldn’t hear them from Green Street but then we received an email proclaiming the news! Lots of cheering and yelling could be heard around campus!
At around 7:30am, a few swimmers and I stopped by President McCartney’s house for donuts, apple cider and, new for this year, t-shirts! Then the team went to Quonquont Farm where we left with an abundance of photos, apples, and memories! We also stopped by Tom’s Long Hot Dogs for lunch and ice cream!
The rest of the day was spent relaxing and baking! I’m already looking forward to next year’s Mountain Day!
One of the biggest time commitments I had during my first year was the swim & dive team! Last semester however, things were a little bit different. Here's how it went! (Pictured above is me at our end-of-season meet, complete with a green-dyed mullet... a grullet)
In a normal year, things would look like the photo above (taken in Fall 2019), but with the pandemic, we had to make some adjustments. The first was practice times. Because only 12 people could be in the pool at one time, we had scattered practices so not all of us saw each other each day. I went from 8 practices in the pool and 3 practices in the weight room a week to 3 in the pool and 2 in the weight room. However, we are still the super-close-loving team we always are and found many ways to connect with each other.
We ate many meals together (similar to how we'd crowd together in Tyler dining hall) and enjoyed hearing about everyone's day!
The captains made sure to keep team traditions, such as yarn night (pictured above), alive which was a wonderful way to meet the new first years and connect with the team again.
The first years still put on their "first year skit," we participated in an Athletics-wide Spoon Assassins Hunt (which got particularly brutal), and even got to compete in a meet against Mount Holyoke at the end of the season! Overall, I was so happy to still have swim workouts in my routine and was even happier to stay connected to the team!
I want to talk about what Pete Davidson had to say about Syracuse NY recently, as he was shooting a movie there. This happens to be the city I was born in, and I still live in the surrounding area.
All he had to say was that Syracuse city is "trash", his reasoning being "The nicest hotel they have is like, a Ramada."
Let's be clear on one thing, Syracuse is not trash, Syracuse is extremely poor. Hundreds of students in the Syracuse City School District are considered homeless (meaning, they either live on the street or simply do not have a permanent residence). We don't even have enough money to take care of these children, let alone put in a hotel deemed "nice" by a multi-million dollar celebrity.
I think it's absolutely ignorant for him to comment like this on a city that is clearly poverty-stricken. I'm thoroughly disgusted.
His fingers toy with the hem of my dress. I’m still damp with sweat from the club. My hair is a mess. I’m exhausted. Jack and coke and codeine floats in my system.
I want to hike up my dress and sit on his face. Feel his tongue swirl against me. Taste his mouth within mine.
His kisses are soft.
His hands are rough.
It’s not enough. It’s potential and neck bites.
I cum, exhausted, suffocating, gasping.
I open the door with shaking hands to garner more air.
We're friends that sometimes kiss. And when he backs me against the wall or toys with the back of my hair it feels good. And I want to have sex but that's just not a line I'm going to cross. Too much of a headache. Too much immaturity. I just want warm strong arms and no problems. There's always some catch these days. And I'm tired of sharing and comparing bedroom stories. And I'm tired of your friends trying to fuck me in a circle.
