Stein's Feelings Towards Spirit: A Reply to Scythespirit's Ask
((Stein’s feelings towards Spirit are…complicated. Spirit was assigned to Stein by Lord Death in order to balance out young Stein’s erratic wavelength. At first, Stein was begrudging of this and tried to keep Spirit at a distance, but eventually, Spirit’s goofball antics began to amuse him and the weapon became the closest thing young Stein had to a friend. The two became one of the Academy’s strongest teams not only for Stein’s fighting skills, but also for the level of wavelength control Spirit was able to give him. Despite his distaste for the required nature of their team-up, Stein began to appreciate the control Spirit was able to give to his wavelength.
Unfortunately, their five year friendship was damaged when Spirit’s girlfriend (Maka’s future mother) discovered scars all over Spirit’s body. Tracing their origin back to Stein, Spirit’s girlfriend accused Stein of using her boyfriend in nightly experiments. When Spirit confronted Stein about this, Stein simply admitted to the charges. Shortly after that, Spirit changed meisters.
Stein secretly feels a small twinge of guilt about what he did to Spirit. Because of this guilt, Stein tries to keep Spirit at a distance by making off-handed remarks about the nightly vivisections of the past. But as much as Stein tries to keep himself at a distance, he always finds himself drawn back to the ridiculous antics of his former partner. Despite the controlling nature of Spirit's wavelength and despite Stein's animosity towards Spirit for leaving, deep down, Stein will always consider Spirit one of his closest friends.))
