Just a few questions: Will this be a physical magazine or an online one? For the first theme, "Lies My Illness Told Me" does phobias that result in severe panic attacks count? You say in your guidelines that you accept 30k stories, is this true as that is actually the length of a novella, short stories have a considered cap of about 7 500 words? Do you have an editor on board your staff or are we meant to edit it all ourselves? And finally, how many submissions are you short for a full release?
This will be an online magazine. I’m going to put a PDF up on Dropbox, hopefully, when the issue is ready to be released.
I’d say so; I’m not sure that phobias count as actual illnesses but if it’s something that plagues you in your daily life and makes functioning difficult, then yeah, let’s hear it.
At the moment, yes, 30K is the utmost cap. I know it’s long, but this is a brand-new tiny independent magazine, so if anyone feels that they have a short story of that length they want to submit, more power to ‘em. Depending on submission numbers, however, I would strongly advise trending towards smaller word counts.
Since the staff consists of just one person at this point in time, and I am an experienced freelance editor, yes, we have an editor on staff (I don’t know why I keep using “we”, it’s super misleading). I will be doing light copy edits (spelling and grammar), so it’s up to you, the writer, to get your pieces as polished and perfect as you want them.
I have a grand total of 4 or 5 pieces total right now, so well short of a full article. I’d like to get up to 20-30, but that might be wishful thinking. We’ll see how things go; this is an inaugural issue, so if Nightlight gets off the ground, issues might be small to start with. We’ll just have to see.
