MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE (2011)- Sean Durkin

A film about a young woman who had recently fled from an abusive cult. Showing the tole this abusive cult had on her and her mental state after certain occurrences. However what I distinguished from the trailer was that this young woman is schizophrenic. She cannot interpret the difference between the dream state and reality. Also at the end of the trailer it suggests that she has two names ' Martha Marlene' and 'Marcy May'. This displaying that she herself plays two characters in which both have very different realities. 

This mellowdrama starring Elizabeth Olson and playing in selected theaters now.

I KNOW I SAID THIS WAS GONNA BE A FESTIVAL MOVIE REVIEW BUT TEMPLE UNIVERSITY HAD A FREE EARLY SCREENING OF IT THE WEEK BEFORE I WAS SUPPOSED TO SEE IT AT THE PFF. IT HITS PENNSYLVANIA THEATERS ON OCTOBER 28th, 2011.

Martha Marcy May Marlene is like a horror movie. I had chills running down my spine from beginning to end. And it stars the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's little sister. What? WHAT?! Don't get me wrong the Olsen twins have always been adorable but their little sister, Elizabeth Olsen, is an extraordinary actress and a new discovery in Hollywood. In writer/director Sean Durkin's debut feature Olsen stars as young woman who joins a dangerous, creepy, bizarre, terrifying cult in the Catskill Mountains led by a dangerous, creepy, bizarre, terrifying leader (the magnificent John Hawkes). She flees and starts living with her estranged sister and her husband (Sarah Paulson and Hugh Dancy) and eventually causes problems for them. Why? Because her past memories and her reality are getting mixed together and harder to distinguish.

The cinematography and style of the movie are extraordinarily well-done (THIS BETTER GET AN OSCAR NOMINATION FOR THAT OR ELSE). As Olsen walks through a door in the present the shots ever so smoothly change into memories of her past. This isn't really supposed to be a 3-act structure movie but an episodic one. That might disappoint people. It's not about "OH NO! Will the cult people find Martha living at her sister's house?!" It's about Martha and her struggle to continue living as she struggles to let go of the past. Olsen (who's already getting Oscar-buzz for her performance) is rock solid from start to finish. You see her panic and her struggle through her eyes. You can't ever look away from her. She's studied acting at NYU which might explain why she talks and acts so much more maturely than her twin sisters.

There is minor flaw in Martha Marcy May Marlene and that is its story (and its ending, I might add, which left many people in the theater screaming and cursing in anger). I think it's great that it doesn't follow the formulaic storyline of the cult finding Martha and focuses instead on Martha's psychological struggle but at the same time there's a blandness that I can't shake off from the movie. It doesn't need a formula but at the same time it kinda does. We watch Martha's memories come into play and that's about it. Does she change by the end? I'm not quite sure. In fact I doubt she even does.

Nevertheless this is a very effective and creepy drama. See it to be disturbed out of your mind and see it for this wonderful new addition to great actors.
