I have never shared a pic with my face. It is something of a personal law that has turned into a joke. I'm going to break that rule tonight. This is me with Seaquin during Sea of Lights getting some fishy kisses (really fishy kisses!). Sadly, today, Seaquin passed away today in the morning. Seaquin was a Pacific harbor seal born in Marine World Africa in Vallejo, CA, in March of 1991. She came to Jenkinson's Aquarium in 1992 to keep the aq's rescue seal - Luseal (Lucy) - company. She was a huge people pleaser that loved tossing rings at her feeders upon completing a retrieval. I only worked closely with her briefly before her diagnosis, but I loved her.
My ΛΤΩ Saturday was so fulfilling. Being able to celebrate 30 years of this bluetiful organization with our gorgeous Founding Mothers, the best chapter ever (ETA), and all the Mermaids near and dear to my heart was nothing short of amazing. Goddddd I LOVE my LTO!! 💙🌊🧜🏼♀️ #Seaquin #LTOturns30 #HeptakinEta #WhatsInTheWaterTheFoundersAreDrinkingBecauseTheyAllLookAMAZING https://www.instagram.com/p/BpA214wAYnjLTtyr9vuwQZNSswIaBz9PgGpaOs0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1wu3fm35z8i7n
Seaquin - a pacific harbor seal - eyes me from her nap. Harbor seals can nap underwater for up to 30 minutes or nap on dry land.
If you see a seal on land, do not approach it. Not only are seals protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act (making approaching a seal potentially a criminal offence), but they can have a powerful bite with their canine-like teeth. If you think a seal is sick or injured, don't try to help it by getting close. Just whip out your cellphone and contact your local marine mammal stranding center, beach patrol, or police department.
By the by, it's common at certain points of the year to see seals "hauled out" on land. You can tell they're just fine from a distance if you see them lying with their tail and head in the air. It's kind of a comfy pose for them.
