Pablo Escobar grew up on a humble farm in rural Colombia, and through violence and cunning he rose to be the most powerful kingpin in the country — and, indeed, the world. While, as Bowden notes, the heavy losses frightened the Search Bloc, they were not cowed.

Escobar's new found freedom was short lived. Following his flight in July of 1992, the Colombian and American government stepped up their efforts to bring him to justice, with America providing funding and training for the Search Bloc, Colombia's special task force created to hunt down Escobar. They received assistance from both the USSOCOM and DEA, and their mission finally bore fruit on Dec. 3rd, 1993, when, following a firefight, Escobar was killed. In a photo taken by one of the American DEA agents assigned to the hunt, jubilant members of Search Bloc pose over Escobar's dead body.
