Recently, I have worked on an advanced search tool. There wasn't many resources on the web so I have decided to write about our approach, hopefully it will be useful for someone out there.

The advanced search tool was for numeric data rich content and although I am familiar with the concepts and structure of data, it is very easy to lose track. When starting to work on the form as part of the user interface complexity only increases. There are tens of potential fields and tens of potential requirements from clients who are from different sectors. Making each field available isn't an option; UX would suffer very badly and budget isn't always available for a big usability test.

So I thought starting with 5 potential search queries would be the easiest solution. We put together all requests from clients, internal requests and analyst created the most complex data set they would need.
