I can 100% see this in my head, like split screens and sadness as they both walk though the halls of McKinley when Sam comes back. Maybe instead of Sam being all "leave Shane for me" he thinks Mercedes has moved on, and because Sam isn't doing everything to win her back Mercedes thinks Sam has moved on. Mutual Pining vibes.

I have a huge headcanon that he and Mercedes spent a lot of That Summer on the bank of the Lake in a little hidden place. Mercedes reading, Sam drawing, both jamming out and singing together to Sam's guitar - this is one of his go to songs.

She gets a record contract after highschool and starts touring and finally Sam is able to see one of her live shows and go to a meet and greet. She smiles at him and talks to him and he's totally freaking out and trying not to show it because he's kind of watched her grow into this Superstar of a singer for years now and he's finally meeting her and he blurts out that he's been subscribed to her from the very start and she remembers his goofy screen name (SamIAm) and the comment he left on her first video and he's totally freaking out now but in a good way because she's everything he though she would be. obviously they get together somehow but idk how

There's something very Sam about this one, but I'm not sure what ship i would go with.

—thing that reminds me of Sam the most, like the scene with Quinn and the promise ring, and him "marrying" Brittany. Sam is definitely not scared of commitment. He also wouldn't be scared of having a star-crossed lovers sort of relationship, he'd stand up for his relationship no matter who was in opposition.
I'm thinking a M/M ship simply for the more taboo nature of it, maybe a Blam AU?

AU Ficlet Idea:
Sam during the summer just before S2. He's hanging out with one of his best friends who he's known for a good chunk of his life who just got his license so they just drive around a lot through the backroads of their Tennessee town listening to Tim McGraw. During one of these drives Sam's friend comes out to him, and this sets Sam on his own journey of self discovery (and just because there's a line of "little black dress" maybe its both gender and sexuality based, so maybe, like enby!Sam or at least Sam playing with Gender norms). But just as they two get closer and have just confessed to each other Sam's Parents drop the news that they're moving to Ohio. Sam's devastated.
September saw a month of tears
Then it ends with Sam back in Tennessee a few years later - probably on his way back to Ohio from New York he decides to go through Tennessee for a few days, and drops a letter on his old friend's door step
And I'm back for the first time since then // I'm standin' on your street // And there's a letter left on your doorstep
OR you can make this a Blam AU, by pretending that the All Boys School Sam used to go to was Dalton, and just forgetting he's from Tennessee

Possibly an AU where they didn't break up because of Finn, but Sam still left during the Summer, possibly without even telling Quinn who's dealing with a lot of other things on top of that (realising she's a lesbian but not admitting it, her dad trying to win back her mom, her older sister having a baby and being reminded of beth) so she's very very angry... Skank!Quinn origin story vibes.

Samtana, maybe, because of how cold and calculating she was with their relationship, and how quickly she dropped him when a new opportunity came around with Dave. Now, Sam probably wasn't in love with Santana or anything, but he's a big softy with a loving heart so he probably felt something for her. So her just dropping him for a new guy, as coldly as she did, would have hurt him a lot, more than she knew.

The Outside
Sam not feeling like he fits in in NY, he feels like he's on the outside of everything and isn't used to that, he's used to being part of a team, used to knowing what he wants out of life, and he thought he did but apparently he doesn't. But also, he knows that maybe he would feel more at home in New York if his friends had noticed how outside of everything he felt, but they didn't notice.

An AU where he realises that she cheated on him in Silly Love Songs and breaks up with her in Comeback by singing this song instead of trying to win her back by doing Bieber. the rest of the episode is obviously just more Taylor Swift songs, ending with Mean as the Anthem they plan to do for Regionals (obviously Sue ends up ruining that, maybe citing some Meta copyright reason as why they can't sing it)

But I think I'm going to go with... Hevans AU. Kurt isn't at Dalton. this is from his POV about Sam dating Santana. idk guys this one was tricky!

Fabrevans or Samtana - which I think will be my go to for a lot of Taylor's break up songs to be honest. But since Sam was more into Quinn than Santana, I think I'll go with Fabrevans.
