University District community: Bring Tent City 3 to the University of Washington

The Tent City Collective (TCC) is partnering with Tent City 3 in an effort to bring the community onto the University of Washington’s campus. Tent City 3 regularly moves throughout Seattle and has successfully been hosted by other institutions of higher learning, including Seattle University and Seattle Pacific University. In light of the staggering rate of homelessness in King County and city­wide policy changes, we have revitalized an effort started by Dr. Amy Hagopian and Dr. Peter House of the School of Public Health. This year’s One Night Count reported a 21% increase in homelessness. By encouraging UW to host tent cities, we can address issues surrounding homelessness by providing a community experiencing homelessness with a safe host site and by increasing student engagement. UW boasts a commitment to our local and global community as well as an emphasis on “groundbreaking multidisciplinary learning and teaching.” Hosting a tent city would provide students, faculty and community members with the opportunity to integrate academics with real world challenges. Seattle University’s experiences with Tent City 3 demonstrate that hosting a tent city inspires relationship building between students and residents. We hope that by cultivating positive interactions we can reduce societal stigmatization of those experiencing homelessness and encourage involvement and advocacy. We ask community members and students in the U District to join us in solidarity as we hold the University of Washington accountable for its commitment to our community and our most vulnerable neighbors.
