Seattle-to-Fresno Mini-Rogue Festival, Review Round-up Day 2

The Saturday of Mini-Rogue brought me to two visiting artists’ shows, all of whom are making their debuts in Fresno! There is always a risk with an untested performance in a city new to the artists, however I am happy to report that both pieces were excellent and very aware of its strengths, all the while being thoroughly entertaining.

Something in the Water 

A solo show of comedic and compelling proportions is on stage this weekend at the Mini-Rogue in Something in the Water. Scantily Glad has brought a solo show discussing gender-dysphoria through the lens of superheroes and barbies, normal-date behaviors and not-normal-date behaviors, as well as some amazing squid-work. The life and mind of Grumms is given brave, vulnerable exploration through the battle of how to live as a monster versus becoming a hero versus someone who just wants to function through life without judgment or stereotype thrust upon them. What Grumms does so well is make this highly-sensitive, very-relevant discussion digestible for those who may be going through the same exploration and transformation, as well for those who are completely unaware or ignorant of the topic. The integrity of solo-show theatre is kept steadfast throughout the performance, but the message is never diluted or lost in genre; gender identity is a social, human construct and is constantly being re-examined and re-defined. That’s how human existence works, that’s how humans operate. That’s normal. You can catch Grumms’ final Mini-Rogue performance at 6pm today.  

Bad Habits

Nothing but good vibes for Bad Habits! Amica Hunter and David Cantor, of A Little Bit Off theatre company, have brought a hilarious comedy which features the good book, the bad book, and a whole lot of nun-based tomfoolery. Both artists not only have the gift for comedic timing, but their physical talents as acrobats, clowns, and magicians play well into this two-hander comedy. Structured as a vaudevillian-style with a twist, the sketches follow a new postulant who is trying desperately to become a nun. Jesus makes an appearance, Satan makes an appearance, all the while the two performers use hover boards to add to the physical pizazz. The humor is there, the talent is there, and the laughs are in abundance, so with more reps and tighter writing of each scene, Bad Habits is a promising fringe hit that is nothing but a good entertainment. You can catch their final show for the Mini-Rogue today at 4:30pm. Don’t miss it!

Season Announcement Wednesday

Hello and welcome to this week’s Season Announcement Wednesday. This is actually a debut season highlight for me, as I have never been to this particular theatrical endeavor. Sponsored by the Rogue Festival, which any regular reader of the blog knows I AM OBSESSED WITH, the Seattle-to-Fresno Mini-Rogue festival promises to be a fantastic Fall fringe festival experience for those who just love that fringe life. I am elated to be able to attend this coming weekend, and below is the lineup. Take a look!
