Midsummer Solstice
The 21st June marks the anniversary of my Granny's death, and the longest day of the year. In Sweden midsummer is one of the most important holidays of the year - if not the most important after Christmas. To honour their pagan forebears, the Swedes construct a maypole and dance around it with flowers in their hair.
This year my friends and I celebrated the longest day of the year by going for an evening swim in seapoint. The water was mild and we bobbed up and down wathcing the marbling sun slip onto the water and then dip into the near horizon.
When the sun had slipped away and before the numbness took over our bodies, we reemerged onto the shore, and toasted the ancient ritual with mulled wine and cake.
