Being tutored as to his inner workings was always an amusing experience. Being tutored as to his inner workings by James Moriarty? Oh -- it was laughable. Still, Mycroft’s veneer remains perfectly unshaken as he exhales against the London-grey skies, following the smoke dancing in ribbons with a languid gaze.
“ Everyone’s heart beats, James, it is an inevitability of the human condition. ”
He is reminded, somehow, of the fallacy first introduced by the ancient egyptians -- wherein their limited understanding of physiology suggested that the source of all human emotion, memory, wisdom, the soul itself, lay within the confines of a beating pump inside your ribcage. What was absurd was that the notion had somehow persisted into the present day, to some degree. They would have been closer to the truth had they aimed for the gut. But people instinctively think that the obvious must always hold the truth, and it takes a great deal of effort to convince them of their error.
“ For a time, ” he adds, bringing the nat sherman back to his lips.
Because that, too, is the inevitability of the human condition, and of everything that is alive. The given fact that where there is a beginning, there must be an end. Whether the thought brings comfort or despair depends solely on the individual.... but does little to erase its certainty.
