Second Career Grant Program: Everything you need to Know!
What is a Second Career Grant?
The Ontario Government has designed the Second Career program to assist unemployed workers attending long-term training, which will help them make a new direction to the economy’s trending areas. The Ontario Government will provide tuition, living expenses, and transportation for the qualified candidate. Many students utilize the second career grant to cover the full or partial payments of their program. NACPT provides additional support to all potential students in the second career application process.
Eligibility Criteria
You can qualify for Second Career if:
● you have been laid off and have not been working
● you have been laid off and are working a temporary job just to cover costs
● If you’re receiving Employment Insurance (EI), or have in the past, you can still apply.
When preparing your application, you also have to show:
● how long you have been unemployed, or working your temporary job, and looking for work
● places you have applied and positions you have applied for (for example cover letters, CVs or resumes, and responses from potential employers)
● level of education obtained
● previous employment, how long you worked there, and skills that were required
● what skills you want to obtain and where you can get trained in them
New update due to Covid-19
The Ontario government changed the Second Career programme, which took effect on July 13, 2021, to better assist laid-off workers in paying for tuition and living expenses if they retrain for new jobs. You may be eligible for these modifications if you were laid off in one of the COVID-19-affected sectors since March 1, 2020. This program provides financial help of up to $28,000 for tuition, books, living allowance, child care, and disability support.
The Second Career initiative attempts to assist people in quickly re-entering the workforce. As a result, the programmed is focusing on micro-credential programmed and training programmed that last 52 weeks or fewer.
People who desire to pursue postsecondary education for more than a year can apply to the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) for a combination of grants and loans to help them pay for it.
