Section 504 of IPC makes intentional insult a punishable offence. An imprisonment of either description which may extend to two years or with fine or with both
Section 504 of IPC:
The Indian Penal Code lists various crimes and their punishments. This Code under section 504 makes intentional insult a punishable offence. It lays down that any person who intentionally insults a person and thereby provokes him with an intention that he knows is likely to be such a provocation which will cause him to break the public peace or to commit any other offence shall be punished with an imprisonment of either description which may extend to two years or with fine or with both. This section comes into operation when a person intentionally insults someone which provokes the person being insulted to such an extent that he will break public peace or commit an offence. It is important to mention that section 504 is different from section 499 of the IPC and the most important difference between the two lies in the fact that in defamation publication to prosecutor alone is not sufficient because it does not affect reputation but under section 504 it will be treated as an offence.
