One day after a devastating fire tore through one of Sedona’s most recognizable landmarks, new details have emerged regarding the condition of Chapel of the Holy Cross and the ongoing investigation.
City officials confirmed this morning that while the fire caused significant damage, the overall structure of the chapel remains intact. The nave and rear exterior sustained the most severe impact, with visible charring, smoke damage, and broken glass throughout the interior. Structural engineers have since assessed the building and determined it is stable, though it will require extensive restoration in the coming months.
Authorities have also confirmed that no individuals were present inside the chapel at the time of the fire, and no injuries have been reported.
The investigation into the cause remains active. While officials continue to classify the fire as arson, there are currently no identified suspects. However, investigators are now reviewing new evidence submitted anonymously by a source close to the Reverend. The materials reportedly include a series of threatening letters sent to Reverend Carter in the weeks leading up to the fire. According to early reports, the letters are believed to have originated from a developer with interests in the surrounding area, though officials have not yet confirmed any direct connection.
Additionally, an audio recording purportedly capturing a conversation between Mayor Hernandez and Reverend Carter has recently surfaced online. The source of the recording and its authenticity have not been verified by officials. However, its emergence has raised questions within the community, with some speculating that tensions may have been building between the two leaders prior to the fire.
Law enforcement continues to urge anyone with information to come forward as they work to piece together the events leading up to the blaze.
In wake of the fire, the Sedona community has begun to rally around the church and the Carter family, organizing several events aimed at supporting cleanup efforts and funding future restoration. Residents are encouraged to participate in the following initiatives over the coming days:
A benefit concert at the local fairgrounds
Community car wash hosted by the Fire Department + calendars available with funds going toward the cause
A bake sale at Verde Valley High School
An open mic night and 50/50 draw at Open Range
Officials say these efforts will play a crucial role in preserving a site that holds deep historical and cultural significance for the region.
Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
It had been a while since Elliott had a successful late night writing session. The flow of words appearing in his laptop for hours explained the fact that he laid in bed without even noticing the smoke in the sky and the faint glow of what could not be the sunrise just yet. Sleep was just around the corner when it caught his attention.
He stared at it for what it felt like hours. The smoke got heavier, darker. His only other action besides standing by the window was peeking in his daughter's room from time to time; thankfully, Juniper was still sound asleep. Elliott knew that there was not anything he could do to help, especially after grasping that the fire probably did not happen in their immediate surroundings.
But still. He had this tingling sensation. His phone felt heavy as he fished it out of his bedside drawer. Maybe social media would help him have his answer, even if it took a while do re-download all the apps, and all his profiles being untouched since high school. And there it was. Speculations about a fire at the Chapel. The same one he and his grandparents used to go to every week.
Elliott's throat went dry. The place was sacred, and it had nothing to do with it being a church. Suddenly, the non-religious man heard himself whispering a silent prayer. He thought about the people in town he cared about, wondering if everyone was okay, though not sure if they still cared about him.
Then he thought about her. Her family, which for the longest time did not include him. Their connection. For a published author, it sure felt dumb to have sixteen failed attempts at writing a single text, but he sent it anyway.
[ 📨 elliott → nora ] Hi, mom. Apparently, there's a fire, have you seen the smoke? I' coming over with Juniper as soon as the sun's up. Best to stick together.

[ 3 minutes later ]

SETTING ⸺ the police station
Only when she was parked in the police station did she take a moment to question if this was a good idea. After hearing what happened , Iyana moved impulsively. She heard no one was hurt , but she still had to find Dre. Hearing it is one thing , seeing it is another. The weight on her chest wouldn't go away if she just stayed home.
How was she going to explain how she found him without seeming desperate? It wasn't her place to be this person for him , yet here she was getting out of the car. She didn't know what she would say or if she'd make him angry again. This felt like a good idea when she left the house , but she wondered if it made her look like a fool.
Any negative thoughts or ideas of leaving disappeared when she saw Dre step out of the building. Iyana didn't hesitate any longer ; she made her way over to him. He didn't look hurt physically, but emotionally? She can tell he wasn't doing okay, and she was sure he'd been telling anyone who asked he was fine. Whether he processed it or not , she knew his tells.
For a moment, as her pace slowed, she wondered if she should still keep a distance between them. It wasn't like they were on good terms, considering how they'd left things last time. But she didn't want the weight of their situation to take away the whole reason she was there in the first place. She picked up her pace , calling out his name as the gap between them closed. Once Iyana was in front of him , she went on her tiptoes and pulled him into a hug. She melted into him , a sense of ease finally settling in her chest. ❝ You're okay , ❞ she reassured him, with a hint of clarification in her tone that she needed to hear.
At 2:38 AM, smoke filled the skies of Sedona as one of the city's landmarks, Chapel of the Holy Cross lit up in flames. The glow of the fire could be seen from miles away, casting an eerie light over the surrounding red rock formations. The Sedona Fire Department raced to the scenes after a driver passing by reported the blaze. Fire crews worked through the early morning hours to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby areas. The fire, at first believed to be accidental, has now been classified as arson after city officials discovered an empty gas can on the property. Authorities have since secured the scene and are treating it as an active investigation.
At this stage, there is no confirmed word on the extent of the damage or what the next steps will be for the historic site. Officials are urging anyone who may have been in the area or noticed suspicious activity to come forward and contact local police.
