This week, I'm highlighting March, which features the Lumper Potato. The Lumper Potato and its close relatives were widely grown across Ireland leading up to the great famines of 1845 and 1846. This then-novel Andean crop grew well in poor soil and could almost single-handedly feed a family, which was life changing for impoverished Irish Catholic farmers living under the harsh conditions of British colonial rule. When late blight destroyed the potatoes, poor people suffered first and hardest, as tends to happen with natural disasters; a million died and a million fled Ireland. Both the Lumper and the Irish survived, growing stronger , and fighting so future generations could live a good life. "When Nazi Germany occupied the Netherlands (where 75% of the Jews were killed in work camps), the Dutch Resistance would wear orange Calendula flowers to show their nonconformity to the new regime and their loyalty to the Dutch royal family, which was in exile. The royal family, called House of Orange-Nassau, has been in power since William of Orange led the declaration of independence from Spain in 1581. The orange carrot was bred in the Netherlands in the 17th century as a patriotic tribute to the family with the colorful name (before that, carrots were mainly white, red, or purple). 2019 calendars on sale until next Tuesday at trueloveseeds.com! February: “Egusi is used primarily in West Africa for its de-hulled seeds. They thicken soups, are a great snack whole, make a paste like peanut butter, have a high oil content, and are also an offering to several Orisas (including Obatala) in Ifá religion in Nigeria and beyond. Egusi is the name for many species of cucurbits (melons, watermelons, and gourds) whose seeds are used for these purposes. This crop is mostly grown by West African women, and they defend their income from this crop with determination as its profitability affects women of all ages and professions (see Lost Crops of Africa: Vol. II for more info).” We will hopefully have seeds available by late January or February. We are waiting to harvest them from the fruits so they can properly cure.
