What will happen to Atlus now that SEGA's in their current situation? Will they be fine or suffer greatly?
Given that Atlus just announced Persona 5, I wouldn’t worry too much about them.
Sega does not technically own Atlus, anyway. Remember, this is how things look:
Sega-Sammy is the mothership entity here — it handles pachinko and other arcade-related stuff, as well as managing the overall company. The actual stand-alone “Sega” branch, the part that is in trouble, is technically separate from Atlus.
If Sega shrivels up and dies, it shouldn’t have too much impact on Atlus, outside of maybe Sega-Sammy pressuring them more to succeed and make up for Sega’s loss.
It’s kind of confusing, I know, but as long as you keep in mind that Sega and “Sega-Sammy” are technically separate entities, it makes a lot more sense.
We knew Sega was in trouble, but it's worse than I think anyone thought. They can try to make it sound better than it is, but these are dark times to be a Sega fan.
Sounds like the plan is to lean harder in to Sonic merch than they ever have before, and hope Sonic fans open their wallets and pull them out of this tailspin.
I can't wait for the sonic boom franchise to die so we can actually get a real sonic game and see what they are doing next after the hedgehog engine games
It might not be that simple.
I mentioned this on Twitter this morning; some people defend that Sonic Boom doesn’t matter because it’s a “spin off” game. It also happens to be a spin off game that Sega of America poured millions of dollars in to over the course of four years. It is a “cross-media” push on a scale they’ve never done before. They are counting on it being a huge success.
Sega of Japan just published an earnings report that says they are moving out of boxed retail games and will be a digital-only publisher by 2015. Going in to a store and buying Sega games on a disc will eventually stop happening some time next year.
If Sonic Boom tanks, it could mean some real bad stuff. It could shake faith in the Sonic franchise as a whole, on a corporate level.
Regardless, Sega games going forward could be smaller-scale projects. Sega could very well be shrinking in to nothing before our very eyes.
Sonic Boom could be a swan song of sorts.
