ive been trying to research online storefronts and ive been looking into seismicart which is supposed to be a storefront specifically for artist alley and i was wondering if you kno how reliable it is?????
Kiriska: SeismiscArt launched early this year in beta, but I’ve heard relatively little in the way of first-hand experience, and so know very little about the site.
It’s a small operation run by two people who seem to have good intentions. My impression as someone who hasn’t used it is that it’s probably fine for now as far as reliability goes. Being a small site means its developers are probably pretty responsive to feedback, which can be really great if you want to see the site go in a particular direction or have specific suggestions.
However, in general, I advise artists to be wary of free resources.
SeismicArt advertises no fees or purchase plans, but that means that as the site grows, it will inevitably need a way to pay for the resources it uses (server costs). If Storenvy and Tictail are any examples, then artists jump ship at the first sign of fees. It can be frustrating to have to constantly move store platforms, so if you’re very allergic to paying for resources, then perhaps it’s better to utilise more long-established free platforms (though those are dwindling quickly, honestly).
If you decide to try it out though, do consider writing about your experiences so others can know!
