Season 4 Episode 5: Heartaches
Sorry for the delay! Real life hits hard sometimes, but at least you could watch the actual episode while waiting for my guide.
The episode starts off with Isabel walking down the halls of her school, all filmed zoomed close on the left side of her face as she walks with purpose down the halls. She walks up to Jake and apologizes for not being able to give him an answer to his invitation to prom. She asks him to meet up with her after school so they can talk more about it and assures him that she'll have a better answer for him. Jake tells her he understands and that he's more than happy to meet her after school. She turns to leave and we can see a smile on Jake's face.
Tara is sitting in class, her head down on her desk, obviously sad about not being able to work up the courage to do what she needs to do. A hand appears and taps Tara on the shoulder. She looks up to see Selene looking down at her, a worried expression on her face. Selene asks if Tara is okay, never having seen our main character so dejected before. Tara stumbles over herself, saying she's okay a few times before finally letting out a long breath. She admits that she's nervous, that she has something really big and important to do but she's worried it won't go the way she hopes.
Selene looks at Tara for a few seconds before letting out a laugh. She that for all the time she's known Tara she never thought anything like nerves would ever get in the way of what she wants. She adds that it's what she admires the most about her. Tara sits up suddenly, looking at Selene with a smile before saying thanks and that she'll talk to her later.
Isabel is once again walking down the hall, this time focused on the right side of her face as she walks outside to the softball field. Camila is sitting on the bleachers, chatting with a few friends during a free period. She notices Isabel and calls out her usual nickname "Izz". Isabel walks up to her and apologizes for not being able to give an answer to her invitation to prom. She asks to meet her after school so they can talk more about it and assures her that she'll have a better answer for her. Camila's friends "ooh" at the sudden confession and prom talk, and Camila has a big grin on her face. She says that she was expecting Isabel to come find her and that she'll talk to her after school. Without another word Isabel walks away.
Isabel is sitting in one of her classes, and as she looks up at the clock we can see its their last period of the day. Suddenly Isabel touches the mark on the back of her neck. It's glowing slightly and we suddenly see Tara and Isabel sitting face to face at Isabel's desk. They confirm with one another that they feel something is wrong, something supernatural is happening near one or both of them. The bell suddenly rings and they agree they will check around their schools to find out what is going on.
They are shown still connected as they run throughout their schools, their school halls blending together in impossible ways as they are laid on top of one another. Tara calls out that she is checking out a classroom as Isabel watches her run through through several classmates and into a wall. Isabel enters into several classrooms of her own school, met with bewildered looks from teachers and students she doesn't know as she flings the doors open wildly. She looks around and spots a room she hadn't checked yet, the home ec room, her least favorite class and teacher from last year. She opens the door more delicately than the others and pokes her head inside. Jake and Camila are laying on the middle of the floor, both face down. There is blood underneath them, pooling the heaviest under their chests. All of the color is drained out of the scene. The camera pans up from them to see a strange looking figure with its back turned to Isabel. A strange laugh can be heard coming from the figure.
Isabel's voice calls out: "You know you did this to them."
The figure turns around and Isabel's face peaks around from its body.
"You could have just said yes to one or no to both. But you just can't handle not being everyone's favorite."
It turns further and a second copy of Isabel's face comes into view.
"I only did what you wanted to do."
It hold it's hands up to show two hearts held in its palms. Both are still beating, slow and strained.
Isabel hasn't moved from the doorway. She is staring at the two on the floor, tears welling in her eyes.
We hear Isabel's thoughts ring out: This is my fault. I couldn't be honest with them. I should have just said something. Then they would be okay and safe. But now they're- And I knew I was just being dumb. And knew what I wanted and I was just being stupid and selfish like I always am.
Her thoughts continue getting faster and more panicked.
Why am I like this? Why would anyone like someone who is like this? I don't. I'm horrible and it's me who deserves to be-
"Isabel." Tara's voice rings out softly. "Isabel it's okay, everything is going to be fine." Isabel can feel Tara's hands on her shoulders.
"Look at what I did, how is this okay?"
"All you did was not have the courage to say something about prom, the same as me." Isabel finally let's her eyes move off of the two on the floor and onto Tara. "Isabel no one dies of a broken heart, we can fix this. Watch."
We watch as Tara lets out a big breath and goes running down the hall. She runs up to the astronomy club classroom and flings open the door, which smacks into the wall behind it with a bang. Selene visibly jumps and looks over at Tara.
"Bon sang! Tara?"
"Selene will you go to prom with me? Also sorry about the door. Well, really about scaring you. I have some flowers for you but they're in my locker."
Selene has a smile on her face. "So was that about me earlier? I thought I hadn't seen you much all day." She pauses for a second but can see the nervous expression on Tara's face. "I can't believe you thought there was a chance I would ever say no."
The two walk up and hug one another, Tara's hands visibly shaking a bit. The color floods back into the scene, emanating from the two of them and bleeding over into Isabel's view of her two friends laying on the floor.
"I'm over my nerves Isabel, now it's your turn."
Isabel swings the door open the rest of the way. She walks over to the figure, before crouching down and placing her hands on Jake's and Camila's backs.
"I'm so sorry to the both of you, I should have answered you both properly. I know it took a lot of courage for you to come up to me. I'm sorry I was too scared of hurting either of your feelings to respond, because honestly, I like both of you and don't want either of you to be hurt. But not answering hurt you both as well. I know it's not what you wanted, but maybe the three of us could all go together? I don't know if that's selfish, but I would like to spend time with both of you. Thank you both for caring so much about me. And thank you too, Tara."
Isabel looks up at the figure, before reaching up and taking the two hearts. She flips the two over and places the hearts back into their chests. Both lay still for a second before gasping and suddenly sitting up. They look at Isabel for a second before she brings both of them into a desperate hug, tears still running down her face. Isabel chuckles a bit before asking if the two heard what she said to them. As it zooms out, the strange creature is completely absent.
The end of the episode is a montage of pictures of all of them at prom. Isabel goes with her mom and Camila to try on prom dresses. Tara, on the other hand, already had a black suit jacket in her closet she bought for the occasion. It shows Tara and Selene dancing together at prom and even sharing a first kiss as the night concludes. Isabel, Camila, and Jake are all dancing together as the two vye for Isabel's attention, not ready to give up on her yet. The two dances fade together with Isabel with her dates dancing alongside Tara and Selene.
