So as of this month, trans ppl in Germany can finally change their name and gender marker without a court case and without having to pay 3k in fees. My local town hall is celebrating by flying the trans flag. Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it!
As a history nerd, the funniest and best thing abt this is that the actual building itself was built by the nazis and this really is a giant fuck you to them.
The time has finally come: On this Friday, 12th of April 2024, the Self-Determination Act was passed by the German Bundestag. From 01.11.24,
The German parliament passed the Self-Determination Act today. The law would allow trans, intersex, and non-binary people to change their name and gender marker on the basis of self-determination. It replaces the unconstitutional Transsexual Law that had trans people go through a court process of several years before being allowed to change their name and gender marker.
It's not perfect; there are still things in it that are probably unconstitutional (like a waiting period of three months that is worsening the process for intersex people who were able to change their name and gender marker through a different law, and certain exceptions that only apply to transfeminine people), but it's here now
This comes after literal years of campaigning by trans and women's groups and after battling some serious disinformation campaigns from terfs and right-wingers similar to what is happening in the UK, but it's here.
It only needs to go through the Federal Assembly for them to approve it. They could technically veto it, but they would need an absolute majority, which is very unlikely (I doubt that many people would even show up).
