OK, my avid follower (Hi Luke!) so my photo journey has now moved onto film. Why? I guess on a gut level, I am drawn to the old cameras, the cold heavy metal, the levers and dials and the unknowing of what you have taken laced with the faint whiff of oil. The feeling of using your gut as a light meter, not knowing whether the gamble between shutter speed and EV rating has paid off with a crisp shot or a blurred one -ISO is fixed on your film remember! Also only having 12 shots and knowing that each shot is final. No delete buttons. When I take a shot a think about it...and think some more. I look at the light, the crop -is my subject in the best place? all the things I know cannot be changed. Only when I am completely sure do I tension the shutter slider and then finally after a final glance at my dials and levers do I click the shutter across. Each sequence is delicious; all encompassing. I am totally at one with my photography, totally engaged and absorbed. This is photography. With my digital I would always click first and then think later. because each exposure is easily repeatable, it becomes worthless, if it is worthless I pay it less attention. Human nature. So here are my black and white 120 medium format shots to date shot on Ilford Delta 100 and self processed at home from film to negative then scanned into a digital image:
My Rolleicord has more built-in natural character than my pentax k5 the way the lens interacts with the light, and the film looks different too. Although I am sure this is a personal preference thing. Also, all I am learning with film will help me take better shots with my digital camera :)
