“Shut up, Bill.” Holden turns his wrist under the ice-pack, trying to reduce the swelling.

“Something like that.” Holden shifts the ice-pack again, not liking the way the cold aches. This was supposed to soothe, not hurt worse. He’s not paying attention to what he says; these are just automatic noises to keep Bill calm.

“Look, if you had to do this, why not do it with Debbie? I’m sure she could have let you out when you were done humping your pillow.”

“Oh, fuck off,” Holden says, bitterness seeping into his tone. “Debbie left.”

“Really. She didn’t like playing reindeer games? Or maybe you reminded her too much of Brudos.”

Holden glances over his shoulder, away from the protection of his bathroom sink. “I’m nothing like Brudos, I don’t wear women’s clothes. And I don’t have a thing for shoes.”

Bill throws his hands up in dramatic despair. “I don’t care what you’re into, Holden. I care that I don’t have to break down your door on a Monday morning because nobody’s heard from you and you’re not picking up the phone. I care about not wondering if you’ve been kidnapped. If this is what scratches your itch, fine, but don’t make me have to give a shit. Now, I’m going to make some fucking coffee, and you can put on a fucking shirt and figure out what you’re going to tell Doctor Carr.”

Holden switches the ice-pack to his other wrist. “Okay.”

“And next time? I’m going to send Gregg out to untie you.”
