Ending the prejudice against pre-tied bow ties...
Bow ties are just all around great. They can make an outfit go from drab to debonair in, well, seconds to many, many minutes depending on what kind of bow tie you are talking about.
Pre-tied/clip-on bow ties have been getting a lot of bad press since the day they were created. "It's not traditional," people say. "Everyone should be able to tie their own bow tie" mock some sartorial bloggers.
My thoughts on the matter are pretty plain and simple. Self tie bow ties rock: and pre-tied/clip on's are good too!
A self-tie bow tie is fun in its own right. No two self-ties are the same, day to day they'll look different and always seek to surprise you. The tying process however, can take a bit of time out of the morning schedule.
Sometimes it won't sit right on your neck ("did my neck get thicker over night?" I ask myself) or the bow just won't come round right. Pull, squeeze, stretch, tear... Oops.
And that's okay in it's own non-perfect, individually awesome way.
Pre-tied/Clip on bow ties are pretty cool too. For starters, they're easy to put on. Some may call that "lazy", but hey, what's so bad about sleeping in and shaving a little time off the "getting to work" ritual?
Plus no matter how minuscule the amount of time you give yourself to get ready, a pre-tied/clip on is always going to give you the perfect look. The bow is always looking neat and tidy.
Not only that, but they also allow for more variety and style! You can have a dozen or more of the pre-tied variety all ready and waiting to be popped on so you can walk out the door look unique in no time. And as bow ties get more popular, it seems many styles are getting some additional flair (in the way of jewels, vintage buttons, and chains) that will really zing up outfits in a flash.
A bow tie is at its heart, an accessory. It can add some classic spice to your wardrobe life and really bring out your own individual style.
So don't get caught up in the "self-tie bow ties are the only way" semantics.
My belief is (in all things): wear whatever you want to wear and be whoever you want to be.
So to summarise - it's time to end the pre-tied bow tie prejudice!
