Pride isn’t limited to self-righteousness. Our pride can also be self-preoccupation: being overly concerned with what others think of us and strongly desiring that others would think highly of us. Shyness can result from proudly fearing saying something stupid. Thinking extensively of how we look or act in public can come from a deep desire to impress others. Regularly redirecting conversation to ourselves can be prideful self-centeredness. The bottom line is that when we are proud, we think a lot about ourselves.

Day 28. The other day we went to meet some friends for a Pokémon Go raid and as we were leaving the house, we got a call asking what our ETA was (we live 1 minute away). He said that someone who was already there had to start immediately because she had a meeting to go to. I’m just wondering what kind of jerk would choose to inconvenience others because she made the poor decision of going to a Pokémon Go raid instead of being on time for a work meeting? In an ideal world where you are the center of the universe, you can have your Suicune and get to your meeting on time, but when you live in a society and you need other people to battle a legendary Pokémon, maybe you can be a couple minutes late to your meeting. The cartoon isn’t necessarily what happened, but it may as well have been. 😖

Audience of One
Dear God,
2023 opened my eyes to how social media paved the way for dopamine addiction and higher tendencies of self-centeredness. The urge to do things "for the Gram" is high. Fear of missing out becomes second nature. Planning things for the "perfect picture". Which breeds comparison. Which breeds discontent, envy, jealousy, covetousness.
This year I wonder, would life be more peaceful if I don't know what everyone else is up to? Would I be more left out because I'm not as updated as everyone?
One thing's for sure. I pray that You would restore my focus and attention, Lord. Help me live again for You alone, my Audience of One.
