Synopsis:
Its funny how different an Epitaph band sounds when not recording for an Epitaph release...at least this was the case back in the 90s as was the case a couple of times with Down By Law. The band sounds so differently. Of course some of that can be contributed to the constant member changes which has always disappointed me, especially when Dave Nazworthy and Ed Urlik (Chemical People) left the band as that by far has been my favorite line up. This release has a more serious yet still maintaining their punk rock sound. I often find it funny when bands choose certain songs for a 7″ release and they pretty much go bust or they just slot in the back catalog as a not stand out song or songs as is the case with DC Guns. The release is ok, but nothing stands out here for DBL.
Down By Law to me always had fluctuating personalities depending on moods I suppose. I personally enjoyed the early years where the band had a more unique/serious sound (which was a departure from the Chemical People members) and sounded more like a progression of Smalleys sound with Dag Nasty. The cover and layout however does not match this and if anything it gives me more of a pop punk feel which I suppose is accurate to a point.
