PEOPLE HAD BEEN whispering ; Josie was aware of it , though it never was quite loud enough for her to hear . Choruses of ‘ She broke her poor heart the last time ’ and ‘ we just need to pretend until we can figure out how to reverse it so she doesn’t need to go through that a second time ’ paraded around the halls of the Salvatore Academy , though Josie was deaf to all of it and she felt like she was being left out on a big secret ––– something she didn’t particularly like , but what bothered her most was the way Lizzie had been dancing around her , avoiding every question or skipping out on any conversation Josie tried to start lately . Was everyone mad at her for something ?
SO SHE GOES to the one person who so rarely felt the need to be anything but honest . In fact , it was one of the many things Josie liked so much about the other girl . Her stomach flips in a way it always does when Penelope is brought up in conversation , or when she sees her down the hall laughing . Josie smiles at the thought . She’s knocking on the door to Penelope’s room before she even formulates the questions she wants to ask ; her presence being something Josie was looking forward to enough to , at the very least , distract her from all of this . ❝ Can I come in ? ❞
