After reading the shocking fact that Tesco threw away 30,000 tonnes of food waste in the first six months of 2013 and after an interview with the Personnel manager of Tesco in Padstow, it got me thinking about the amount of food waste I produce, not yearly but weekly.
Although I don't strictly adhere to sell by dates on food products, I often throw away items of food that are perfectly edible (especially when I go home from university). In hindsight I could be giving that food away to food banks, charities or even just to my friends, however I always take the easy option and just throw food items away.
As we come to the end of the Grand Challenges week, I'm coming to realise that these shocking statistics we find are not just useful to persuade others to make a difference, but in reality we need to start with ourselves. Often when I hear in lectures that my actions can make a difference I have dismissed it, and it's not really till I've been a part of a project that aims to tackle these big issues that I've noticed I myself don't participate in helping solve waste problems.
