I like the tidbit of how in Shadowheart's love scene after she rejects Shar, there are a few pans to the full moon. Reflecting how Selune's light now shines upon Shadowheart and how she is now empowered by her.

I also like to think that in a weird and convoluted way, it reflects how Selune guided my paladin down the path to intercept Shadowheart in the nautiloid and in turn everything else that happens after. That is my head cannon, anyway.

Shadowheart is free to love the character fully without having to worry about some petty goddess getting jealous.

Just some Headcannoning things for the relationship between my character and Shadowheart:

I like to think that my Paladin of Devotion has a bit of a reckoning when it comes to Shadowheart in Act 2. Up until this point, Shadowheart is a Sharran simply by word. Her deeds and approvals say the exact opposite and it allows my Paladin to ignore their differences in philosophy and ideology. The snide remarks towards Selune can be brushed off and ignored. The deep discussions about Shadowheart's faith can be had but they are outweighed by Shadowheart's constant show of heart and compassion.

Getting to the Shadowlands is a harsh reminder of who Shadowheart worships and the glee and excitement she expresses in becoming a Dark Justiciar is a deeply unsettling thing.

And to be quite frank, my character hates it. She LOATHES it when Shadowheart talks about wanting to be a Justiciar and being a faithful servant to Shar, in Act II. Being surrounded by the horror and desolation Shar caused, she cannot reconcile that with the person Shadowheart actually is.

I also like to think that for Shadowheart, this is also where she realizes that she cannot have both. Shar does not allow for her followers to have room in their hearts for anyone beyond her. And it does play in her decision to defy Shar.

Shadowheart is so obviously in love with the character after theor first kiss. Homegurl is down BAD. She remarks about how much happier she is with said character. Staying down the road of being a Sharran would mean giving that up in some form and she does not want to do that.

But before she comes to the decision of defying Shar, it eats away at her that she will have to let Tav go in order to fulfill her Justiciar dream. And when it comes to my paladin, it is not lost on her just how ideologically opposed they are. My paladin's loathing and disdain of Shar becomes more palpable the longer they are in the Shadowlands. Its a heartbreaking thing for Shadowheart because she has to reckon with the fact that being a Sharran will eventually equate to opposing my character.

Following the doctrine of Shar and doing her bidding is a very easy way to find oneself on the end of my Paladin's smite. And unbeknownst to Shadowheart, my character has on fact put down sharrans in duty to her oath and dod not lose a sleep of wink over it. In fact, my character has found herself standing alongside and assisting Selunites in her travels from time to time. This is something that should be quite obvious to Shadowheart but its another thing she lies to herself about.

My character also reminds Isobel of Aylin, and my character gets along with her quite well. There is also a bit of a possessive streak to Shadowheart, and she hates how well isobel and my Tav get along 😅.

Something had been nagging at Shadowheart since she spared Dame Aylin's life in the Shadowfell. There were countless moments where she would realize with a sudden start that she was staring at her hands. The hands that had so often been folded in supplication during extended prayers to her—to Shar. The hands that disobeyed her clenched-jaw command to run the aasimar through with the Spear of Night and instead threw it into the fathomless black void of Shar's domain.

Every time she looked at Aylin or her lover, Isobel, since that wonderful, awful, exhilarating, terrifying day, something unnameable and deep squirmed within the cleric. She told herself it was hatred at first. But in her heart of hearts, she knew it wasn't that. It should be that. But it wasn't. Shadowheart supposed that's what made her such a terrible Sharran.

Mother Superior always saw through to my weak, doubt-riddled core, Shadowheart berated herself as she caught herself staring at the Selûnites' silvery manes gleaming in the moonlight. She was right to. I had everything I ever wanted within reach, and I threw it all away. All because some moon witch claimed to know my truth. A truth that wasn't hers to know.

Whether that truth would be her shackles or her liberation remained to be seen. But she had parents! Parents currently being kept prisoner by the same people she had called family for as long as her potholed memory could recall. Mother Superior would regret teaching Shadowheart how to infiltrate, interrogate, and torture when she turned those very skills on her.

Not that she was looking forward to that encounter.

The moon was beginning to rise, and the cleric's gaze wandered upwards to meet it before she averted her gaze. Shadowheart couldn't find it in herself to hate the sight anymore. But she should. It had been easier traveling in the shadow-cursed lands when she was surrounded by her L—Shar's divine energy. There, the moon had been completely obscured except if you looked in exactly the right spot at exactly the right time.

Not that she had been looking.

But now it laughed at her from up on high, its many spots and pockmarks looking like a lazy smile. Was it the mirthful, nurturing laugh of a mother or the cold, bitter mockery of an adversary? Shadowheart wasn't sure anymore, and it was eating her alive.

The half-elf nearly flinched when Karlach came bounding over unannounced, cradling her wrist. A gnarled root in the woods they were camping in had given her a nasty fall and she was here to beg a healing spell off "her favorite cleric."

And that was the heretical, horrible thing: the magic came. It goddess-damned came, glowing radiance gathering at her fingertips on command, stitching skin back together and fixing bone back into place as if Shadowheart's entire reality hadn't been turned upside down and inside out. As if…as if nothing had changed.

And that was a truth Shadowheart wasn't sure she was ready to admit to herself yet. But it mattered little whether she was willing to acknowledge it. There was no denying that Shar had excommunicated her but the magic still came. And more damning yet, it didn't look any different than it always had.

Shadowheart spent that entire night haunted by dreams of silver-haired maidens frolicking naked beneath the full moon, its celestial radiance slowly encroaching on her field of vision, looming ever larger until at last it was mere inches from her face. Close enough to kiss.

Not that she wanted to.

By the time the moon rose the next evening, Shadowheart felt ready to crawl out of her skin. Like an itch she couldn't reach, there was a maddening wriggling feeling beneath her skin. When they'd passed through a small village earlier that day and stopped to restock supplies, her hands had once again moved on their own accord to make an impulsive purchase at the dye merchant's stall. She had no idea what possessed her to buy enough whitening dye to blanch every head in camp as white as Astarion. It was certainly enough dye to exorcise the inky blackness from her hair.

Not that she wanted that. …Or did she? It would certainly make a statement, mark the turning of a page. Maybe even scratch that incessant itch within her.

"Whatcha got there, sis?" came the unmistakable voice of Lady Luck.

Shadowheart's heart squeezed in sympathy to hear the luster lacking in her friend's voice. Ever since their own transformation, Miss Fortune's light had dimmed and no amount of wine and gossip could restore it beyond those moments of levity. The light that had slowly found its way to their eyes as they all traveled together and as they fell in love with Astarion had gone dark again.

Shadowheart hid the dye bottle she'd been inspecting behind her back. "Nothing that concerns you," she snipped, sharper than she meant.

But as always, Miss Fortune was too quick for her. Before Shadowheart could anticipate their movements they swerved to the side, the dye plucked from her hands moments later.

"Oh sis," they teased as they held the bottle out of her reach. "Were you planning to go bottle blonde all by yourself? With allll that hair?"

"What if I was?"

"Girl."

Miss Fortune's ability to convey an entire monologue's worth of sentiment in a single word was one of the very many things she loved about them. Shadowheart found herself smiling despite herself.

"If you're that desperate to keep your mind off your own troubles, you're welcome to help," she said more casually than she felt, inspecting her nails the way Astarion often did when he feigned disinterest.

"GIRL! Yes! Change into something you don't care about getting splotched with white and meet me back here; I'll get everything ready."

The way Miss Fortune's skilled fingers massaged the dye into the roots of Shadowheart's hair, newly shortened nails scratching just right against her scalp, made the cleric's troubles melt away for a time. She was glad Karlach had talked sense into her after she stormed off after Miss Fortune's big confession following Jaheira's poisoning.

It hadn't been the secrets themselves that set her off; it was the hurt that after all they'd been through together they still felt the need to keep them at all. But Karlach pointed out the many ways Lady Luck showed they cared for her and the others—like helping her with her hair—and it had softened the jagged edges of her pride.

"How did you know I was planning to dye my hair, Lady Luck?" Shadowheart demanded to know once they had gathered the ropes of dye-soaked tresses up in a pile atop her head and secured it with towels.

"You have the look of a woman going through a bad breakup. Of COURSE you're gonna change your hair. Lucky for you I am well-versed in both late-night heartbreak split decisions and radical hair transformations, cuz girl, there is no way you were going from Sharran Black to Selûnite Silver in one night without help," Miss Fortune insisted, pouring them each a glass of wine.

It was a good thing Miss Fortune intercepted her. Both for the company and the help. It took three applications of the dye and half the night to get her hair light and gleaming; without her friend she might have given up, growling grievances at the greyed hairs stubbornly clinging to their pigments. They both let out a jubilant cry, equal parts elation and relief, when at last the dye washed out to reveal a gleaming coif.

"Stunning, Shads, truly. Now, if you're taking suggestions on a new cut, I have so many thoughts about that fringe of yours," Miss Fortune broached once they'd toweled her dry.

"I trust you, Lady Luck."

While Miss Fortune cut her hair, Shadowheart wondered what Lae'zel would think when she saw her. Would she appreciate the symbolism, or chide her for an act she deemed frivolous vanity? But when at last they allowed her to look in the mirror, there was a rightness to her reflection that not even her lover's grim practicality would be able to shake. Running her fingers through the sheet-white strands, Shadowheart couldn't help but think her hair looked like a blank slate.

She was beginning to think that was exactly what she wanted.
