Top 5 SPN villains. and show your workings for extra credit
Thanks @sematalba! Sorry for the delay on this, this was extra hard because Supernatural loves to make their villains our friends, so I had to decide between if I want to solely focus on the big bads, or if I can include the villain-to-friend characters. I’ve decided on the second one. I also haven’t watched the early seasons in a few years so my memory is a little rusty. Used some wiki pages to make sure my workings were as accurate as possible, so hopefully they are! Apologies in advance for any discrepancies lol.
Anyway, here they are:
5. Amara: I admittedly don’t remember a lot from the Season 11 plot arc with Amara and God, but from what I vaguely recall, her quick descent into villainy was largely due to her douchebag of a brother. Amara ultimately became a sympathetic character to me; a being who loved her brother so much that she was often victim to his manipulation. One of my favorite aspects of her character is her struggle to do what’s “right,” and her love for her brother’s creations. Despite being The Darkness, she was able to find the beauty in the things that God learned to despise.
4. Billie: Probably the only one on this list who is a villain until the very end (that being said, I understand her frustration in her early appearances lol). Even when she was a reaper, Billie was a formidable foe. Her dedication to keep Sam and Dean dead once and for all was threatening, and it always felt like if someone would be able to kill them forever, it’d be Billie. Of course, that’s largely due to dumb decisions on the Winchesters’ part; I’m thinking especially of the couple of times that they purposely killed themselves to traverse the veil. Billie always seemed to be there, ready to interrupt their plan. Of course, I also have to bring up her S15 arc, and the revelation that she was using Jack to “help” the Winchesters so she could take control after God was out of the picture. Kind of the ultimate villain move, yet it still managed to surprise me.
3. Crowley: Crowley was so often used as comic relief, and consistently walked the line between being good and bad, that I often forget he was a main villain in two seasons. He’s done some unforgivable things (see: killing Meg) that make him a great villain, but has his redeeming qualities and ultimately made a pretty impressive sacrifice in 12.23. I’m leaving his description pretty short because he’s been around so long and his story is so complicated that I don’t dare try to remember everything about his character right now...
2. Meg: Meg 1.0 was, I think, the first demon we sort of get to know in SPN. I remember being so surprised when she was revealed to be a demon. She started out as a pretty straightforward villain, working for Azazel and all. It was her second vessel and the arc of Meg 2.0 that made me love her. Similarly to how I feel about Crowley, Meg has also done some bad shit, working for Lucifer and causing the deaths of Jo and Ellen in Season 5. But ultimately, she sides with TFW, risking and losing her life to protect Cas (and the Winchesters by proxy) because she loves that angel...and because she really hates Crowley.
1. Rowena: I loved Rowena the moment she was introduced as a villain, and only loved her more and more as she became a recurring character and teamed up with TFW. One of my favorite things about Rowena is that even after joining the team, she still looked out for herself and kept her best interests in mind while also helping to save the world. Rowena could hold her own for the most part, and often didn’t need to help the Winchesters, but she did it anyway because this once cold, manipulative woman grew to care for them. Her character development didn’t degrade her character or turn her into a damsel. Love this witch so much.
Honorable mention: Azazel, for being the original big bad
